The Ancient
The Ancient
An arrogant, self-possessed know-it-all. Uses Sleipnir as a mode of transport and glorified podium; thankfully, the Skydancer is mostly bemused by this development. Thinks he's in charge; isn't. Odin joined the Lundlaevungar when the Clan was yet young. He considered himself to be a great asset and made no secret of this fact. Angrboda did not like his arrogance, but Loki allowed the Fae to give him counsel and accorded him the respect that he demanded. Visitors to the Clan often mistake Odin for the leader of the Lundlaevungar. He wears the role far better than Loki in both manner and appearance, and Loki does little to prevent him. Those who do not know Loki well fail to understand why he allows Odin such power and prestige, when behind his back he often mocks the other Fae. However, what they fail to realise is that Odin’s bluster and self-importance fulfil an important function: they allow Loki to pursue his own, more frivolous interests, leaving the dull matters of state and ceremony to Odin, who actually enjoys such things. However, Loki is not so foolish as to allow Odin full control. He may be a member of the Lundlaevungar council, but he is not its leader for all that he would like to be. Yet Odin is still not fully trusted by Angrboda, even after all the time that has passed, and the feeling is entirely mutual. His research and dabblings with foresight have led him to believe that she is linked with some catastrophe that has not yet come to pass. He has made claims in the past that the mutations of her offspring were not caused by Arcane energies, as Loki believes, but by some defect in Angrboda’s own magic: a hurtful accusation at best, and one which caused a permanent enmity between the two. He also dislikes Loki and Angrboda’s offspring, in particular Hela, Jormungandr and Fenrir. Hela he will not go near; he knows of her power and fears it. What he does not realise is that it is too late. She has already foreseen his death, though she keeps that knowledge to herself. Jormungandr he hates. Much of their enmity is down to a simple clash of personalities: the spiral bears Odin no ill-will, but nonetheless Odin finds his manner and habits and even his tone of voice irritating in the extreme. More than that, however, is the fact that Jormungandr seamlessly fuses his natural element with Water attributes – an achievement made with no effort, when Odin himself has been unable to attain the same even with years of training and spellwork. The spiral may not have foresight, but he has some elements of the Tidelord’s power in his gills and his resistance to the pressure of the depths, and Odin covets that which he cannot have, jealously. He also fears Jormungandr’s friendship with Thor, and where his twisting and wrestling and thoughtlessness might lead. Yet it is Fenrir he cannot stand. Fenrir, whose particular affliction lies in his mind. |
