xxxxto be cursed is to find routine in a daily tragedy
Lore by the fantastic Tobin
Saltwater Savior, Zara held no fear of the depths below as she dragged soul after soul out of the sea's deadly clutches. Left to drown when she was an infant, Zara had been forsaken as the runes on her side had been mistaken for a bad omen. But Zara was born anew to the depths with saltwater in her lungs, in her veins, as she became servant of the ocean's fates, whatever element she had previously all but changed. For the souls not yet meant to die, the waves cried out to her "not here, not yet." Her clan didn't understand that it wasn't divination, but duty that guided her to the doomed and drowned treasures. Each person saved was a moment of peace the call of the sea would give her, each coin a reward for her diligent service. She could never explain the horrors of her past, shying away from any mention of it. How could Zara explain that she didn't fear drowning again, how could she explain that it would only be the depths calling her home? |

The Seer and the Savior
a short story by the fantastic Tobin
xxxxxxx"I don't understand how you aren't scared," Accalia said as she sat down next to Zara between the tidepools. Zara nodded, hoping that Cali would merely drop it, or mercifully change the subject. "I mean, you're just so brave, but the idea of drowning scares me a lot. I worry about you a lot out there. What would Luar say if you got hurt?" the seer queried, with wide, worried eyes. Zara understood it wouldn't be dropped or changed now. xxxxxxx"I'd think Luar would know in advance, and would stop me going out," the Saltwater Savior lied, feeling the slight motes of victory as Cali visibly calmed down. Perhaps her questions had been sated for the moment. xxxxxxx"You're right, I guess it's dumb to worry about the future," the seer said with a yawn, looking up to the moon hanging a silver strand above the sea. It illuminated the waves' edges with a soft white glow, and Zara couldn't help but get distracted by how beautiful it was. "I brought a gift for you, that's why I'm really here," Cali interjected into her thoughts, shuffling through the small pouch she kept at her side. The seer held out a seaglass marble, a wave seemingly trapped inside it. xxxxxxx"It's beautiful," Zara said, astounded as it caught the same silver-lined hue the waves did. xxxxxxx"I hoped you'd like it! It is beautiful, and that made me think of you." Cali exclaimed, cheer evident on her features. The Saltwater Savior gently held the marble in her claws as she looked over the seer, her gossamer silks catching the moonlight, the threads now seeming to be made of moonbeams. xxxxxxx"Thank you Cali," she said with a faint smile, her usually bitter looking features softening for a moment. Her heart beat against her ribs with the force of the waves against the shore, unable to express that she thought Accalia was beautiful too. Unable to explain to herself why she felt drawn to the guardian like the tides were pulled by the moon. | x |
