Children produced from this union of the skilled smith Rhiana and expert runecarver Ronele are not flesh and blood, but beautifully sculpted steel, brought to life by Ronele's magic. They send these creations out into the world proudly, eager to display the achievements of their art. There are, however, exceptions: hatchlings with glimmer are Rhiana and Ronele's biological children, whom they take as apprentices and teach their crafts.

An elegant creation, Kyrith is all too aware of his own beauty. It fascinates Ronele to wonder whether Kyrith's extreme vanity comes from nature, from the idiosyncrasies of the runes that brought him to life, or from nurture -- from being told by his "mother" and "sister" that he was beautiful. While this behavioral quirk made him a good research subject, it makes him a rather bad clanmate: he refuses to do any sort of labor and insists that his only purpose in life is to look pretty, and that others should support him just for the privilege of looking at him.
