As a brilliant mage, Ronele could have turned his talents to almost anything, but he decided on runecrafting and specifically the use of runes to create artificial life. Teaming up with the sculptor-smith Rhiana, he inscribes her already-realistic creations with runes that give them a semblance of true life. (Ronele has learned that the more a lump of metal resembles a real dragon, the easier it is to enchant; he's considering writing a thesis on why.)

While he doesn't really regard his creations as his children -- or, if he does, he attaches little emotional significance to the fact -- he does observe their activities and development carefully. The main thrust of his scholarship is to figure out how slight variations in the runes he places on their bodies lead to differences in behavior and function for the constructs thus produced. He's constantly experimenting and gathering data. He hopes both to map the exact relationship of rune variation to behavior or temperament and to constantly improve his runecrafting to make the most natural-acting possible constructs.

Once he's observed all he can from an individual construct, however, he has no problem sending them on their way -- in fact, he considers doing so urgently necessary, so that their influence does not contaminate the next model. What happens to them after that is none of his concern, though he may occasionally try to check up on them for scientific reasons, to learn if they have experienced any unexpected changes in functioning over a longer period of time.

Ronele shows little interest in his biological children either, unless they share his magical talents and inclinations, in which case he places great expectations on them to complete a top-tier education and find their own magi-scientific research niche.
