Life wasn’t great at all for Venice. It wasn’t even mildly good.

First, there was the plague of hatchlings. Now, don’t get her wrong -- she had nothing against freshly hatched dragons. But a plague of hatchlings is a different story. It had started with a clutch of Spirals. The little noodles kept getting under foot and eating all her insects. Then, suddenly, there were more of the dragonlings -- Spirals, Skydancers, Guardians, Coatls. They came from all over Sornieth it seemed just to flock to her den and eat her insects. No matter how often she gathered or hunted, there never seemed to be enough food. And as suddenly as they appeared, the hatchlings disappeared in some mass exodus.

After the plague (on her pantry and psyche), there were the dancing Faes. You would think living in the depths of the Wispwillow Grove, far away from other clans or dragons, would be enough of a deterrent for unexpected visitors. Nope. Venice wasn’t the only one drawn to the mysterious giant fungi forest. The dancing Faes appeared as suddenly as the hatchlings. And they were loud. Oh so loud, with their music and constant shouting. The stone-hued Skydancer made more than one attempt at chasing the dancers out. Snarling and gnashing her teeth, she leaped at them with her claws outstretched. It didn’t matter. The dancing Faes came back despite her numerous attempts to regain some peace and quiet. It felt like months before her cavorting, unwanted guests finally left her alone.

In the short intermission before the third incident, Venice put up signs and set down traps. Anything to prevent more unexpected visitors. Her efforts were not enough, however, as a third wave of visitors entered her fen one misty morning.

The Skydancer was startled awake by the clink of plates and dishes. Fearing the hatchlings, she shot out of bed claws outstretched. ”Not my INSECTS AGA--” Her fury fizzled quickly when she realized she was staring at a pair of very large (and very hungry) Imperials. The two males regarded her cooly and waited until she regained her composure. It took her a moment to realize that not only had the Imperials also raided her pantry (for the seafood this time). but that they had also trampled the phosphorescent fungi garden she had just planted. Venice had thrown her hands up in resignation and left the Imperials to their meal (eating her food, mind you). She wasn’t stupid enough to challenge two grown Imperials -- and especially not if they were hungry.

After being absolutely intimidated by unwelcome guests in her own home, Venice had decided to take to the road. Gathering up all her meager belongings and what was left of her beloved pantry, she began the search for another den. It wasn’t all that pleasant, traveling alone, but the Skydancer managed to stay well fed and out of the bellies of hungry predators.

Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. And months nearly turned into years before Venice finally found a small swath of land she could call her own. She had no idea where she was, but it was quiet and there was a cave she could use for shelter. And one day, she woke up to another strange visitor. This visitor smiled and asked politely if he could stay awhile. Just long enough to rest his tired feet, he had said. The Skydancer smiled back, put at ease by the visitor’s calm and respectful demeanor. Hours turned into days and days turned into weeks. By the time the weeks turned into months, Venice and her visitor had grown quite close. She grew to love his patience and the quiet way they worked together. She was content, she realized. And that was good enough for her.

'Perhaps,' she thought to herself as she gardened beside him one day, 'perhaps this is the start to my good life.'
