As the Queen of a small kingdom in the Frozen Wasteland, Esslem found her duty to be often stressful and overwhelming. With her parents dying at a young age, Esslem had to teach herself how to be a ruler at a younger age than initially intended. She would consider herself a lost cause if it weren't for her personal fool and close friend, Tristam. He would give Esslem advice on new laws and decisions she should make as the Queen, and became her unofficial advisor early on.
Esslem doesn't go outside of her castle much, as she relies on Tristam to give her the news on the latest happenings in the kingdom and any action that she may need to take about it. As she can get very sensitive and insecure, she approaches Tristam's interventions when she's interrogated by surrounding kingdom officials.
When a strange Wildclaw by the name of Tiran found himself in Esslem's kingdom and reports came in from distressed residents, Esslem quickly ordered his capture to inspect what kind of creature could be so fearful just at the sight of them. When the Skydancer saw the ghastly dragon, Esslem felt a sense of worry rising within her.
Despite Tristam's reassurance that Tiran can be used for Esslem's army and protection, Esslem would constantly fear the being that laid in the kingdom's basement. She wasn't sure about Tristam's promise to keep the Wildclaw in check and out of trouble, but her trust in him outweighed her own insecurities. Her fear began to grow as reports of disappearances began to reach the ears of the Queen, but Tristam had told her that he had kept Tiran under close watch and that he would be used to find the culprit.
Soon, however, Esslem's fears would become a reality. Tristam had gotten fed up with Tiran and tried to kick him out to the outskirts of the kingdom in hopes of him wandering into the woods and finding another kingdom, but in the cloak of night the Wildclaw had returned and sought for revenge. He stole the souls of Esslem's sleeping army and used them as puppets to infiltrate the castle and overtake the kingdom.
Esslem, soon awoken and startled, quickly ordered an evacuation and fled with Tristam. Although she's still unsure of who the attacker was, as Tristam quickly warned her and said they didn't have enough time and should flee, she always wondered what happened to the Wildclaw that was under Tristam's care and why he didn't use them to defend the kingdom.
