The Glimmerlings are descended from Raylings affected by a disorder which causes their magical energies to constantly leak out into their bodies instead of properly storing in their minds and wings. This caused them to have a hard time storing information in an efficient manner and compelled them to be in near-constant motion to work off the excess energies before they could cause them any harm. Sadly, this caused the other Raylings to shy away from them.

The outcasts did not let this get to them, however, and instead found company and love in other dragons, slowly but surely leading to their greater diversity in appearance and establishment as their own subspecies. It has also resulted in a propensity for other subspecies to sometimes pop up in a nest with two Glimmerling parents, as genes that have been lurking in the background rear their head again.

Many Glimmerlings still resemble their distant cousins, however, and are often what other dragons actually see when they think they have seen a Rayling. You should not let this disappoint you if it happens to you, however, as Glimmerlings are the best way to contact the Raylings... or anyone else, for that matter (this is only partly due to having distant relatives everywhere - Glimmerlings are quick of mind and wing and can often find dragons other couriers cannot).

If you are in need of a Glimmerling courier, the quickest way to gain their attention and pull them away from whatever aerial acrobatics or other activity they are up to at the time is by flashing a mirror, coin, jewelry or a piece of broken glass - anything that can reflect the sun, really - at them. Unless they have a prior engagement, that should send them speeding down shortly.
