Poe’s colleagues generally described him as polite, orderly, meticulous, hard-working, and a gentleman (so long as he was sober). But Poe also loved a good feud, and when he fell out with an employer or colleague, he seems to have relished trading barbs and insults. He also feuded (sometimes in an obsessive, one-sided way) with fellow writers. Despite the heavy influence of his heroes on his own writing and his tendency to present himself as vastly better educated than he was, he often accused other writers of committing plagiarism and of puffing themselves up. But who among us doesn’t have a hypocritical streak?
