BHALTAIR
captain of the rose guard

Bhaltair grew up very close to his father. The elder guardian Baltar was a warrior through-and-through, and taught Bhaltair all that he knew about the warrior code. He was a constant source of inspiration to his young and impressionable son, an idol he could look up to and strive to be more like, and it made it that much harder on Bhaltair to watch as Iazqano escorted his father to be exalted. "The mighty Earthshaker has called upon me," he told his son. "Do not mourn me, for this is the highest honor, and I will ascend in glory."

The exaltion ceremony, and the sight of his father departing, was one he would never forget. And after all was said and done, he donned his father's own raiments and armor, and took over as the head of the Rose Guard. Though years have passed, he's yet to believe he's properly filled his father's boots — though his mother Briar often argues otherwise.

As head of the Rose Guard, Bhaltair escorts the heads of the clan and the clan's ambassadors on their travels, trains new members of the guard, and works closely with those such as Fall, Brutus, and Maro. But it's the Gaoler named Mammoth who he admires the most. When he finds himself fighting senselessly or recklessly, Moth's presence grounds him and reminds him of what it means to be a guard. In some ways, they remind him of his father.

However, his lost father is not the only member of the family Bhaltair cares for most. He's just as close to his mother, spending lunch with her on the daily to talk over recent events, and he deeply admires his elder sister Besijana, who lives in the Ashfall Waste. He often boasts that his sister is the most beautiful guardian in Sornieth, having inherited all of his mother's good looks. He would attend any beauty contest, if she would enter. Hint hint, nudge nudge.
