Birch is a friendly gaoler with a strong work ethic and a policy to always be honest. While his clanmates consider his openness a positive feature most of the time it also makes it near impossible for him to keep secrets, making it a very common practice for them to sneak around and hide information from him. Fortunately for them, and unfortunately for him, he is very oblivious of his surroundings and it is quite easy to pull the wool over his eyes.

Birch takes his job very seriously, and will often donate his personal funds to account for missing treasure in the hoard. He is unaware that the missing treasure is due to his coworker Morrigan embezzling it, and he typically assumes that the missing items are the result of a misdocumented transaction or a mistake in coin counting.
