Faroe The Forest Guard |
You exit Razbi’s training arena and go back to wandering the land, enjoying time away from the confusing Platforms. Soon enough, you find yourself on the outskirts of a forest, which strikes you as odd considering the location. Still, you begin to enter, following the narrow dirt path with careful paws. There are huge trees here, oaks and birch, cedar, aspin, ash, and dogwood, an unnatural conglomeration of species in perfect harmony. You can hear birdsong through the area, the creak of branches in the wind, and the distant thump of hooves. So distracted by the life of the forest, you nearly jump out of your skin when a Skydancer appears in your path, a brown mask affixed to his grey-scaled face. He stares at you, tense, then tilts his head as if listening to something. With a sigh, the Skydancer relaxes slightly, and you can see a red boa looped around his neck, hidden in his black mantle.
“Apologies for scaring you, I am Faroe, and this is my forest. Stay on the path and you will be safe, I don’t want to have to fetch you.” |

Though Faroe’s egg was nested in the Ashfall Waste, it was brought to a far off forest by means of magic, only days after it was laid. It stayed nestled in the roots of ancient oaks for almost a year before it was hatched by catastrophe; a wildfire was raging through the forest, destroying nearly everything. When it finally reached Faroe’s egg, it did not burn it, but rather allowed it to hatch in a burst of embers, the fire abrupting stopping moments later. Soon, the King of the forest, a weathered Pearlcatcher named Zandrys, approached the young dragon and took him under his wing, promising him safety and purpose in life. Zandrys began by training Faroe in magic, granting the Skydancer telepathy with animals and minor control over the forest itself. From there, Faroe became a guard for the forest, specifically the Heart that resided deep within the caves underneath it.
Soon enough, Faroe grew curious of the world outside the forest and began to venture into town, eventually befriending a charismatic Nocturne ranger. The two grew close, dancing between friendship and romance as they explored the woods and the secrets it held. An unfortunate mistake. The ranger grew greedy, wanting to take the Heart from Faroe’s forest and use it for his own, something Faroe couldn’t allow. The Skydancer tried to talk his friend down, but the ranger simply cut Faroe down, leaving scars inside and out. The Heart was retained in the forest by Zandrys’ power alone, and Faroe retreated back into the trees, not daring to venture into towns again. From that moment on, the woodland spirit would never be seen without a mask over his scars. |
Faroe continued to guard the Heart--now more cautious of outsiders--and lived in the forest as a peacemaker between the fauna, protecting the natural order of his home. He grew close to the magical creatures Zandrys has placed to help him in the task--the Behemoth, the Nix, the Hallows--and found himself at peace for the most part.
Things changed again when Zandrys came to Faroe with news of the Heart, specifically that the Heart was moving. Having never seen the Heart himself, Faroe was understandably confused, but promised Zandrys to follow his charge wherever it may go. Zandrys told him to follow a dragon, an ancient forest dweller by the name of Sumrokul, and he would stay near the heart. Trusting his mentor, Faroe did just that and found himself at the clan of the Galestorm Flyers. At first he was confused, as the clan resided in the wide open Windswept Plateau--the most foliage he saw was common bushes, there was no forest in sight. He stuck to the outskirts of the clan for several days, untrusting of community, until Zandrys emerged from within the Flyers and led Faroe to a plot of land set around what appeared to be a cave entrance. Faroe could feel the Heart pulsing beneath his feet, no doubt underground as it was before, and as he stepped on the land he saw it. Tiny saplings, beginning their lives. With a surge of magic, Faroe grew the forest around him, allowing fauna to roam inside his home once more. He still resides in the forest, now sharing it with Gulfam and Sumrokul among his beasts, ever vigilant in guarding the Heart. |

Before the incident with the ranger’s betrayal, Faroe was a kind, curious, and excitable soul. He found joys and wonders in the forest around him, danced through life despite his two left feet and made friends with the creatures of the forest, magic or not. He spoke of the forest with great reverence, acceded to the powers of the Behemoth, Nixs, and Hallowed, and thirsted for life. However, when his face became scarred by claws, so did his heart, and much of this boyish wonder for life was lost.
8 Faroe became a more withdrawn dragon, untrusting of civilized culture and unwilling to entertain crowds anymore. He no longer trusted his own ability to read other’s emotions, rather relying on the telepathic communication he harbored with animals to find who he could trust; he would often lose his voice from disuse, as he spoke almost exclusively through telepathy. Simply put, Faroe is a flighty and antisocial dragon. |
