Biography
P E N E M U E
Gaoler Ambassador
Gaoler Ambassador
"Take this one."
The Gaoler was enormous. Far bigger than she had expected. Lassuarium watched wide-eyed as the mother nudged the glowing egg forward. She had heard the news, been sent scrolls and sketches of these ancient Gaolers by the far-flung explorers and scholars of her clan in the preceding days. But she wasn't expecting to meet one so soon. The Hewn City was a labyrinth, its unwavering shade would of course attract these new dragons so set on keeping watch on the world.
"Wh-what does--" she stammered,
"I am a seeker. I must seek." the Gaoler had a sharp gaze, "It so happened that my nesting time came soon after I had set off from our home."
Lass crept a step forward to look at the egg, so as not to upset the mother. It had a faint sparkle that rippled as it teetered slightly. It had scuffs along one side, Gaolers must be fastidious with their egg-turning. The Gaoler seemed unphased as she sat in the shadow of the erroded columns, her stunted wings at her side. Lass understood that she had reached this decision calmly.
"You want us to take it in? Until it hatches?"
"Take it. It will learn of this new world, and it will be called home in time."
Lassuarium was stunned, "Why, of course, that is certainly something our clan can do if you're sure--"
"I trust you, Light Dragon. Word has passed around of your clan. And we are connected through the Ice Father, you understand the virtue of preservation and patience, yes?"
"...Yes." Lassuarium pulled the egg gently towards her as the Gaoler walked away slowly, looking back now once more before vanishing into the ruins....
"Focus, Pen."
"I am!"
"If you're talking, you're not focusing."
Penemue grumbled, growled and gurgled as he glared into the blackened mirror. It was three times his height and twice his width, it was one of the oldest and most reliable mirrors the clan possessed. And he couldn't summon a single flickering vision from it.
Sphene sighed and put an enormous claw on his shoulder.
"That's enough, Pen." He pulled a velvet cover over the looking glass and Penemue's sulky reflection was hidden away, "You've done your very best, that I can see, but I don't think you have the aptitude for enchantment."
"But but but--" Pen scurried about the Imperial's legs, tugging at his coats, "I'm not good at books! And I can't fly! And I don't like the furnaces they scare me!"
Sphene lowered his head and nudged him from where he was making a nuisance of himself, "Pen, why are you so worried? We don't hold examinations in my classroom, we're not expecting you to pass a test."
Penemue's snout quibbled, "Can I try it again?"
"Let us both take a rest before you get a headache." Sphene slowly walked through the high ceilings of his teaching chambers, pausing to snuff out bees wax candles on the chandelier, "Come, lets go to the roof garden and have some tea--"
"No!" Penemue barked, "We have to try again!"
"Pen, please, you're being very--"
Before Sphene could finish Penemue had scampered through his legs towards the grand old mirror. As Pen took the velvet by his teeth and tried to drag it off, the mirror began to teeter forward. Sphene rushed and snapped him up by the scruff. The mirror clashed into the stone floor, the smashing of glass echoed through the library. Spirits trapped for centuries gleefully wisped away into thin air.
"No no no no no no--!!"
"Pen." Sphene said with his mouthful, "Its alright."
"Its not alright!" He wailed.
"Pen." Sphene stated, placing him onto the floor and away from the glass shards, he stared into the hatchling's dewy eyes and spoke firmly, "I promise it is okay. No one was hurt. It is just a mirror--"
"Please don't send me away..." Pen sniffled, and started to hide himself away in Sphene's lapels.
Sphene enclosed his arms around him; he couldn't imagine the terror the poor hatchling had with nothing firm securing his place in the lair. He had Lassuarium's word and the love of the clan, but that wasn't something you could hold onto.
"Pen, nothing will ever make us send you away. You're a child of our clan, and you don't need to earn your place here."
"Okay..." Pen sounded muffled in the layers of his coat.
He felt Pen wriggle into his chest pocket and his chuckled.
"I am!"
