“Would you like me to give you
a formula for success?

It’s quite simple, really:
Double your rate of failure.

You are thinking of failure
as the enemy of success.

But it isn’t at all.

You can be discouraged by failure
or you can learn from it,
so go ahead
and make mistakes.

Make all you can.

Because remember
that’s where you will find success"

Right, I know what some of you might be thinking: "who's this guardian and why should I care?" Either that or "when will she shut up." I get it. I was in your seat not long ago, staring up at the dragon on stage, feeling like I was in over my head. This place has a way of doing that to dragons, making them feel like they are both invaluable yet disposable, capable yet incompetent. It's not the gig for everyone, but believe it or not you're the lucky few. See, you get a choice. The whole place seems a whole lot more important when you live here.

I was born from a clutch of found eggs. I'm sure the scientists who kept my egg incubating recorded where the scrappers found it, but none of us are ever told those things. All we know is we were found somewhere along the scrappers' collection missions. It happens more than you'd think- scrappers finding abandoned eggs and bringing them back to the spire- so at least I wasn't alone. My clutch, if you could really call it a clutch, included a skydancer who hatched a few days after me, and a nocturne who hatched minutes after him. You might think of them as my adopted siblings, but the scientists always discouraged such attachments. We were there to work, to become cogs in a greater system, so it was more important for them to encourage our personal development for the sake of placing us.

I suppose, looking back on it, that I was part of a social experiment. What happens when you take a large, clumsy guardian and give her a stunningly beautiful skydancer and a small, adaptable nocturne as hatchmates... then pit them against each other in competition? They never made us fight or anything, you can tuck away your lawsuit thanks, it was more of a constant test of abilities. My... "brother"... was good with other dragons. He used his wit and his looks to win them over despite whatever nonsense came out of his maw. He could probably accuse Stormcatcher himself as being volten-brained and get away with it. His skills really shone in paperwork, because he could use his manipulation skills to make the paperwork say what he wanted. He now teaches other dragons to write in loop-holes and clauses in contracts to keep the spire on top of things.

My... "sister?" She could have picked anything. I've found nocturnes tend to be the most flexible of dragon species. She could discuss nuclear reactions with the scientists one moment, switch over to locomotive mechanics, then gush about hatchling assimilation all without batting an eye. I envy her. She was able to choose her part here, having found a passion for mechanics and becoming one of our finest mechanical engineers.

And...me?

I wasn't raised by paperwork or machines. When I was a young intern, I was drawn to the dragons themselves. Fast-walking, smooth- talking business dragons with their perfectly tailored suits and gaggles of dragons fawning over their physical prowess? Oooh, was I infatuated with them, their ability to command attention in any room, to bring the fear of Stormcatcher in dragons just by standing in back of a meeting to watch. They were organizers, in charge of assessment and approval. Their jobs were to decide how good of a dragon you are, how valuable of an employee. Sure, there was some paperwork that came with the gig, but that power-!

I'm sure they noticed how often I lingered around them, trying to mimic their movements, to learn from them. Started dressing like them the moment I started earning wages, though back then they had me working every job in the spire. I would jump around making mistakes. Blow up a lab and fix it, then get shipped to the mailroom. Clog the system, fix that, then onto the next mistake. It was a blow to my ego, but pretending to be one of them helped build me back up every time. What I didn't realize back then is not only did they notice my interest, but I was actually being groomed for the position. Every single one of those important looking dragons once worked every position in the spire, top to bottom. After all, how can you judge dragons on their performance in an area you've never worked before? Yup, their intention was to have me fail and see whether or not I could fix it, whether or not I kept on trying. Of course, this way of training came with a risk, but they didn't tell me until after I finally joined their team for real.

Those who fail and give up, who can't learn from their mistakes and make amends? They become, essentially, the Steves of the Spire. (They don't all literally transform into Steve, but he's so infamous around here they coined the phrase in his honor. So much chaotic energy in that one.)

Thankfully, something in me could not be dissuaded from trying and trying again. Maybe I just liked how I looked in trousers too much to put on work gear. Maybe part of me really did know where my path was heading. If anything is for certain, though, I know exactly how to motivate dragons because I was in their shoes... your shoes, and I promise: there's a reason there's only ever been one true Steve.

You'll turn out fine. I did.

Not that I'm satisfied. No, I don't think I've reached greatness. I might be the hard worker I was destined to be, and I for sure have the business swagger down, but I could be doing more with my life. Maybe it's time to settle down, to stop stealing girlfriends and get one of my own. Who knows, maybe I could find myself a real family. Dragons who won't mind a big, clumsy dragon joining their clan and doing her very best. I can't offer much in way of skill, but I have loads of experience in messing up and trying again, and if it'll help you like me more, I'll work myself to the bone for you.
