Theme Song

Long before his egg even hatched, all of the dragons knew there was something not quite right with Bunyip. His egg, unlike the rest in his clutch, started to change color to a darker, duller green. It began to stink, so horribly that everyone believed that it was rotten. But the egg hatched, and he seemed normal enough. Looking identical to his brother and sister. Though he could never seem to get rid of the stink that cling to his feathers, no matter how much he bathed or what he rubbed into his feathers. No one in the clan would outright say it, but there were many that wished he and his stench would leave.

The little hatchling, surprisingly strong for being newly hatched, set off. He became very lost, but was discovered by some dragons in an arcane clan. He was found by a pair of coatls, on their way home from visiting a plague clan, with two hatchlings of their own that had also hatched earlier that day. They did not mind his smell, as it was foul as their own. Upon hearing this small child's story, Pestilence felt immense empathy, as he had experienced a very similar welcoming to the world. He took the rejected baby into his family.

As soon as he settled into his new home, the hatchling's eyes began to change. They went from normal coatl eyes, to having horizontal pupils, almost resembling a frog's. This unsettled many members of the clan, and none could explain it. The child settled into his new adoptive family, who were quite different from himself, but he still felt safe with them. The clan was as wary of his adoptive family as they were of him. Not angry or afraid or mean, just uneasy. As if they knew there was something not right with them.

The child, who was named Bunyip, felt strangely drawn to swampy areas. He, unlike other coatls, did not care to keep himself clean and pretty. Bunyip began following around Beastmaker, an imperial who frequented the swamp. He enjoyed the feeling of cool squishy mud on his feet, of swimming in murky green water, of slimy algae coating his feathers. He frequently snuck away to play in the swamp. If one could not find him, their best bet would be to seek out the nearest swamp. He started to shed his scales, and fireflies from the swamp started following him around whenever he played there, so often that they left permanent marks on his body.

One thing that drew a lot of attention was the fact that he did not seem to age. As other dragons his age grew up, as more hatchlings were born and started to grow, Bunyip remained small like a child. He never grew past the day he hatched.Searching for an answer, his adoptive parents brought him to the clan's sorceress, Voodoo. After much research, asking Bunyip questions, his adoptive family questions, and even sending messages asking his real parents questions, she finally discovered the answer.

Bunyip should have been stillborn. The hatchling's spirit had left before the egg had even hatched. However, a swamp spirit was seeking a new body to possess. When it happened across a dead, unhatched coatl, it seized the opportunity and possessed it. This caused the egg to change color and begin to stink. This caused the hatchling's eyes to change shortly after hatching, his scales to fall off. Why he is so drawn to the swamp, and why he doesn't age.
