Note from Mother
You're an odd one, Eseld, but odd is not always a negative quality. Through much of my own life, I have acted without concern for the way anyway else is affected. We are strong of blood, why should the opinions of anyone else matter? It became clear to me very soon after you were born that you were going to be a much different dragon from me. I don't know how you do it, I can't begin to comprehend what it must feel like, but I truly believe you are able to feel emotions that are not uniquely yours. It started with the gardener's mother falling ill. She wept, and wept, worried that we wouldn't have the means to take care of the sickly woman, and you wept with her. You, a little hatchling, hardly big enough to understand what it was you were so upset about, wept as if it was your loved one's life you feared for. It didn't stop there. You walked on a cloud for days after your cousin's first successful hunt, your eyes welled with tears at the sight of red roses when the blacksmith's husband left him with only a rose as his goodbye. I do not understand this affinity you have for the heart of other's, but I hope it will not hinder your journey in making an appropriate match to carry on our bloodline.
