White Queen
┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
[Named after the White Swan from the ballet Swan Lake]

Odette and Odile have a complicated past. Originally neighbors of sorts, they once ruled territories next to one another surrounding an enormous, serene lake. Waterfowl of all species swam daily on the lake, and relied upon it as a food source, especially during migration. Both dragons preyed on the ducks, swans, and wading birds in the lake, and gradually a rivalry began. It started as a mere watchfulness: both females vigilantly observing one another during their daily hunts on the lake, carefully calculating how much prey the other had managed to take down, the hunting techniques they used. Gradually the number of dead waterfowl piled up-- both dragons began taking more prey than they could eat themselves, and the surplus was left to rot on the lake’s shore, creating a foul stench that could be smelled from miles away.

The rivalry escalated further. The pair actively began to compete for the same birds, pushing each other’s hunting prowess to the limits. They dueled from dawn to dusk, and although they were both exhausted each night, the thirst for victory gave them the energy they needed to rise before dawn the next day and begin again, the blood from the previous day’s hunt still caked in their feathers.

The rivalry drug on for months, resulting in the decimation of the waterfowl population of the lake. In response, the remaining flocks of waterfowl stopped appearing at the lake, as did most of the other wildlife. They weren’t stupid, and they refused to be victims of the dragons’ killing sprees. Deprived of the source of their conflict, the two dragons wasted no time in focusing their violence on one another.

Their combat escalated until one day, they both went too far. Odette had been spending her nights in the den of a handsome Imperial male, and knowing this, Odile devised a plan. She snuck into the male’s den at dawn, when she knew Odette would be on her way to the lake to meet her. She spared the male’s life, but inflicted enough bodily harm that he heeded her warning: if he ever met with Odette again, the next time Odile saw him would be the last time he saw anything. The male left the area immediately, limping and bleeding, never to return again.

When Odette realized Odile was not at the lake, it didn’t take long for her to guess what her rival had done. She flew as fast as her wings would carry her, but found only blood and carnage when she arrived at her mate’s den. A blind rage and seething hatred overcame her. Tracking Odile’s scent, she found the female lounging smugly atop a pile of duck bones, a triumphant smirk on her face. It was too much for Odette. Odile, drunk on her victory, wasn’t prepared for the fury that met her.

When the fight died down, Odile lay floating in the lake, barely clinging to life, surrounded by a cloud of crimson water. Odette hovered above her fallen enemy, her rage gradually fading with the realization that she had won. She watched the crimson water spread and spread, until the entire lake became a pool of blood. Odette suddenly felt sick. Odile, unconscious, was heavy, but Odette managed to carry her to the lake’s shore and set about licking her wounds. Her saliva sealed the deepest gashes and gradually the stream of blood flowing from her body into the lake stemmed to a slow trickle, and then ceased flowing completely.

When Odile finally awoke several days later, she found herself in Odette’s den, the white Nocturne curled protectively around her. And that was the end of their feud. In silent agreement, the females ended their futile struggle against one another and became close companions instead, working together to restore the pristine beauty of the lake they called home. A sign of their success, the waterfowl returned, along with other wildlife, and the pair took great pride in protecting their perfect oasis from those that wished to do it harm, vowing to do so until the end of their days.
