Wandering Spirit
Lost Fae of the Water Flight

Battle Maiden | Clan Protector | Wandering Spirit

From the day of her hatching, Nataliya always listened to the elders. Their words guided her through life, and as a result she rose in prominence within the clan, within her flight. Her only wish was to protect those who raised her. Family, Clan, Flight. And protect them, she did.

An avid and creative student, she learned quickly. Many thought her attempts would fail. “You are too pale,” some said. Others, “Your coloring makes you a better target.” But she proved them all wrong, adapting tactics to her needs and rising in the ranks. She flew the skies during the day, targeting threats by coming out of the sun. No one could see her until it was too late. It was a good life filled with the satisfaction of duty well done.

But somewhere along the way, her fate changed. For reasons unknown, luck abandoned her. The most ironic part of it was, she didn’t even realize she’d died at first. It had to have happened in the skies over the Crystal Pools while patrolling the borders of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. One minute she dove with the intention of saving an unsuspecting Nocturne from imminent demise, and the next she lay flat on the ground, alone, all sounds of battle gone, aching from head to toe. Glancing around, she saw no one – none of her squad mates, none of the enemy, no one at all.

… save one very suspicious looking character dressed in grey watching her intently from the shadowy edges of the forest.

“Well,” the figure cackled, stepping forward, “that was a rather spectacular display.”

Nataliya stared at him. “Your point?” she demanded. “I have a battle to get back to.”

But the creature simply cackled louder. “Your battling days are done, my dear,” he said.
“What are you talking about?”

He walked to her side, pointed to the skies above, replying openly and honestly, “I was sent to guide you to the Beyond. Your days of battle are now over.”

“You lie!” she challenged, huffing as she glared at him. “I am a respected warrior! A battle maiden who –!”

“Who has fallen in battle,” he replied mildly, unimpressed by her anger.

Her gaze narrowed on him, searching the shadows beneath the hood of his cloak. All she could readily see was his beak sticking out before him. “You were sent by Shadow Flight, weren’t you?” she hissed. “Deceiver!”

Taking the scythe in his hands, he started to rotate it with speed. An eerie sound began to build, filling the air around them. Nataliya, startled, looked around her in fright. Every dragon knew the tales. The stories of the Reapers who wandered Sornieth seeking the fallen to take them home. Chilled to her bones, Nataliya’s eyes closed.

“Your days as battle maiden are done,” the Reaper intoned. “From this day forward, you will serve in the Ghostlight Ruins.”

Shocked to silence, all she could do was shake her head in denial.

Sighing, his blade came to a stop. Leaning against the pole, in a kinder tone, he said, “You served your kind well before. Use that to help them now. Others will follow, you know this. Prepare yourself to help them cross.”

And just like that, her duty changed. No longer was she Nataliya, Battle Maiden but Nataliya, Wandering Spirit. Pale as she was in life, it now serves her as a light to guide those of Water Flight as they cross over.
