Biography
My name is Draco and I am the dragon who will take you to the stars. Or, of the stars, at least. Or …
Scowling, Draco stared down at the page, disgusted with his effort. How was he supposed to get the other dragons interested in the night skies and stars above if he couldn’t write about them? “This is nothing but gibberish!” he muttered before shoving it and his pen off the table in an angry huff. It didn’t do much to make him feel better, but at least he didn’t have to see his failure right in front of his snout.
A soft scuffling from the far side of the room tickled his ears. There it is again! He craned his neck, staring over in the direction he thought it originated. Where are you? I know you are there! But all he could see was a shelf containing five different tomes regarding the different constellations, the ones he wanted to share with his fellow dragons; an old crate turned upside down that he used to lean on when staring up at the night skies; and his favorite telescope …
Draco frowned. I thought I left that over by the window? His eyes trailed across the room to the window’s location. Sure enough, there were marks indicating the telescope had been there. He peered more closely, walking over to investigate. And itty bitty little footprints leading all the way to … Following the trail, he pulled up short, his snout bumping the scope itself, as he straightened.
“Well, pardon you!”
Draco blinked. “You – you spoke!”
If it was possible for a telescope to look affronted, this one did. “Of course, I did! How else can I relay the information you seek?”
“The information …?” His voice trailed off as his eyes narrowed to slits. “You have never spoken to me before!”
The large end of the scope blinked over the lens. “Well,” it huffed, “you never asked!”
“I –.” Draco cut himself off realizing they were getting nowhere. “Can you help me?” he asked instead.
The lens peered up at him, suspicious. “With your paper, I presume?”
Draco bobbed his head once. “I want to teach my kind about the stars in the sky,” he explained, “but everything I write comes out sounding … wrong.”
Cautiously, the telescope tiptoed over to the paper. It tilted downward, obviously reading, before lifting back up and looking over at the dragon. “Every constellation has more than one star,” he said sagely.
Draco’s face contorted in confusion.
“Never mind, lad,” the telescope said, “you will understand soon enough. Come over here and we will try this again …”
