STORY ★

Breeze sighed as she looked through another stack of paperwork, lying on the bamboo mat in her room. The Skydancer was going crossed-eyed, and she hadn’t even cleared half of her share of work. Being Viridespine’s secretary was hard. She eyed the open sea visible from her open window, the already darkening sky reducing her vision in the waning light. If only she had a window in the west.

A bang on her door startled her and she let out a shriek. Calming herself, she took in a deep breath before she opened the bamboo sliding door.

It was her Hurricane Herald, Gerald. She suddenly felt stupid for freaking out. Anyway, Gerald extended a scroll to her before turning away and leaving her documents scattered around the room in its wake.

She glanced around, groaning internally before unrolling the scroll. Then her eyes widened.

Dear whoever is reading this,

You have been selected to adopt a hatchling from Windkeep Tower. His name is Yachid, and his parents are Xinskarr and Xaiya. We believe that you are the best possible candidate for raising our son. Come tonight and collect him. Tell the Wildclaw you’re here for the future.

It wasn’t signed. Breeze turned the letter around to see if there was any hidden writing, but it didn’t. She sighed and tucked the letter into her sling bag. She had read up on the situation of Windkeep Tower from the documents she had just been reading. If they were correct, it truly was disastrous. She knew the current rulers were exactly the sort you didn’t want to control the clan, what with their iron grip and fear-instilling techniques. Shuddering, she plotted her own path, one that would garner the least attention: Straight over the Sea of a Thousand Currents and the Tangled Wood. Then the Zephyr Dancer remembered that one of her kind was a rare sight, especially Warm Thermals tribe ones. Oh well.

Breeze locked the door behind her and walked to the main area. No one questioned her as she flew up one storey to reach the entrance. “I’m going out for a while,” she said as an aside to Tuuli. “I’ll be back soon.”

Tuuli glanced at her, sizing Breeze up before frowning. “But-”

“I’ll be fine.” Breeze stated before spiraling upwards into the clouds.

The trip there was easy, if one didn’t count the setting sun getting into her eyes. However, she only reached the Windswept Plateau under the cover of nightfall, where the sun could not illuminate her body and alert the guards. The fog had begun to set in, and this also meant no one could see her, but she couldn’t see anyone as well.

Then, she saw a Guardian in the distance taking off from a specific area and so she flew nearer. She registered a Wildclaw and a Coatl before they demanded, “State your business.”

Breeze replied, “I’m here for the future.” She glanced around the area, in case someone was listening.

The Wildclaw nodded, and a Coatl hatchling was set in front of her by the Coatl - Yachid, she assumed. This hatchling was awake, and he was blinking at her with wide eyes.

Breeze bent down to pick him up. “I’m Breeze,” she said to Yachid as kindly as possible. “I’ll be taking care of you.” She looked over at his parents. “He’ll be well taken care of,” she promised. “Good luck against Quartz.”

She turned and spread her wings, before flying towards the east. Yachid bade one final goodbye before his parents disappeared in the mist.

She would do anything to keep Yachid safe. She swore it on her life.

A pair of letters are delivered, a bit crumpled and late, but otherwise intact.

Dearest Yachid,

My you have traveled far! We're glad you have found such a good home. Light is in your roots, you know, as your mother was born in the Sunbeam Ruins. We're happy to hear that Breeze is taking such good care of you, and making sure you are safe.

A warrior is a wonderful job! Though we hope you remember to stay safe, no matter how strong you get. A store sounds lovely too, your sister is talking wanting to open a tea shop when things settled down over here!

It's true that is too dangerous to come and visit at the moment, but we promise once its safe, we will take a trip with Yuu to go visit your brother in his new home and you in yours. We miss you very very much. We've sent a little something for you, Querida got Mollie to make it, but it wasn't ready until after you left.

Love you always,
Mom and Dad

Dear Breeze,

Thank you so much for your letter, and thank you for looking after our son. It means the world to us. We are so glad that he is settling in well and connecting well with others.

We had wondered if any of our children would display any magical talents, given the magical bloodline on their mother's side, and we are glad to hear his is developing well!

Yaara has left us as well to go and stay in a nearby wind clan. We've gotten a letter from him and he too is settling well in his new home. Yuu is still with us and she is happy, though she is too young to know the full extent of what is going on here. We know we can't shield her forever, but she is such a happy hatchling, I don't want this war to take that from her. Here's hoping that everything will all be over soon, and Yuu can grow up in Windkeep Tower the way it was before.

Thank you for your well wishes, and may the Lightweaver shine brightly upon you.

Sincerely,
Xinskarr and Xaiya

Hi Yachid!

Mom and Dad wanted to write, but they are really busy with the resistance right now, so I thought I'd write to you instead! Quartz and Banella recently issued a decree saying every resident of Windkeep Tower must learn elemental combat magic and so Winterstone's set our plan into overdrive because we want to stop them before they get too big. I've been trying to stay out of it, I hate training...

Training! Right! That's why I was writing! You said you were training to be a healer! I've been looking to learn some healing, because I'm really bad at physical combat, but still want to help the resistance. You should hear the stories everyone in the Underground tells about the old days, before Quartz and Banella came. It sounds like a beautiful place. I wish I could have seen it... I guess that's why everyone is fighting so hard to overthrow Quartz and Banella.

Sorry, I'm getting distracted again. I do that a lot. It's part of why I'm not good at battle training.

So yes, please get back to me about healing, especially if you know any healing to do with herbs. I love plants. They are just so beautiful and delicate and smell so good! In exchange, I'll gladly give you advice for good tea recipes! I guess your selection will be a bit different, because different flights have different plants, but I can send you one of my favourite brews I've discovered recently!

I can't wait to someday see you actually in person. I miss you so so much. I am so glad you've found such a great home!

Love, your sister,
Yuu

P.S. The roses were a suggestion from Yaara! Have you been in contact with him? He seems really happy in his new clan too!

Yachid!

It's so great to hear from you! Sorry it took so long to get back to you, thinks have been a whirlwind here. We have a new healer and I've been trying to pass on what little medicinal knowledge I have to help.

It is true! Windkeep Tower is free from Quartz and Banella and Fenn and Elric are back! It's so nice to live in such a beautiful clan, I can see why everyone was fighting so hard to protect it! Quartz was killed in the battle, but Banella seems to have turned over a new leaf and is living in the clan still. Their youngest son, Sapphire, is the new prince, and I think he's a great fit. I know now everyone trusts him because of his parents, but he's sweet and friendly and I'm sure everyone will grow to like him. I must admit, Garnet scares me a little, but she seems okay too. Topaz has left the clan, and no one seems to know where's he's gone. Banella might, but she's not saying anything.

Oh, enough about clan politics! I'm so happy to hear from you! It sounds like you're really liking your new clan! Congrats to you and Yrene, your children look beautiful!

I actually have a mate and children now too! His name is Yarrow, and he's a bit shy, but he's really sweet! We have a beautiful son named Zerila! He's an author, or at least he's aspiring to be! He's really inherited his father's creativity! We had a second egg as well, but it went missing and Yarrow and I were never able to track it down. Every since then we've been talking about fortifying the nesting grounds, to prevent anything like that from happening again. I hope that wherever our child is, they're okay.

Yaara is doing great! He's been writing to mom and dad a lot, and he seems to be enjoying his new clan! He's run into another dragon from Windkeep Tower by the name of Breeze. I think she's Luster's sister or something? His family line is hard to track because he got separated from his parents when they were very young, from what I've heard. But yes! Send him a letter! I'm sure he'd be overjoyed to hear from you!

That you for your letter, I always love hearing from you.

Love,
Yuu
