Torrik was orphaned mere minutes after he was born. Compared to his other newly hatched siblings, Torrik appeared frail and needed more attention to his health, which his parents did not have the time, food, or care to give. Thus, he was left as easy prey for scavengers to finish off.

Thanks to luck that could only have been bestowed by the Stormcatcher himself, Torrik was not found by scavengers but instead, a rather curious Akirbeak. The bird noticed the nest and remains of newly hatched eggs and soon found the young hatchling shivering terribly in the cold. Without hesitation, the Akirbeak began to warm Torrik, who was smaller than the bird at the time. From that night on, it began to raise Torrik as its own. Hence, the Guardian had found a guardian.

Torrik's frailty faded as he grew bigger and stronger. At the same time, he was growing at such an enormous pace that the Akirbeak covered less and less of him every time it sat on him to give warmth. Eventually, Torrik grew so large that the Akirbeak was the one to start curling up beside his belly for warmth. For many months, the two of them remained like this, hidden away from the rest of the world.

Due to his upbringing, Torrik developed an unnatural affinity to avian creatures. Despite his kind being meat-eaters, Torrik vowed to never eat any feathered animal. He owed the Akirbeak his life, and yet, he knew that he one day we would have to re-enter the world of dragons.
