Unearthly Aberration

She’d met this dragon before, a Guardian, large and imposing, and into things she shouldn’t have been. Five didn’t approach the dragon, unsure whether she was Touched or not. In a place like this, it seemed likely, but it paid to be polite. Besides, she didn’t recognize this place, the light. She must have been back.

“Not safe,” she managed.

The Guardian smirked. “I could say the same to you. Why do you think I’m here?”

Crazy, yes. Malevolent, no. Five relaxed. She didn’t respond or move, though.

The Guardian took the smallest of steps forward, almost comically small. She squinted her bright green eyes and, for a moment, the entire universe seemed contained in their small space. Lights and stars swirled around them, and a faraway lightning flashed on the Guardian’s smoothly metallic hide.

Five jumped back, splaying her feathers in warning and hissing, “You know him.”

The Guardian jumped, too, glancing behind her as though she hadn’t seen. “Him? Who, him?

“The Darkness.” Five lifted her paws and pointed with all of her talons. She could feel it now, the cracks opening. Reaching through. Grasping, clawing, roaring silently at the light he despised.

“Darkness.” The Guardian whispered, almost scoffed. She waited, casting another cautious glance over her shoulder. “Look, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t know who you’re talking about.”

“No?” Five came a bit closer, and the Guardian stepped back. A longer step, this time. “He knows you.”

Five doesn’t know where her abilities come from except that she seems to have been chosen by fate or the gods for some larger purpose. Unlike other dragons, she can see in complete Darkness, slip through cracks in the sky, and walk where even the gods fear to tread. Too far away to touch, but close enough to feel the breath on her mane, Five knows the danger from Sornieth’s nightmares is closer than any dragon would like to imagine.

When Cyclone discovered Five, she was wandering through a cold wood in the lands of Ice, thin and hungry. Cyclone didn’t know that, at the time, though Five’s feet were securely in the snow of Sornieth, her mind was somewhere else. Somewhere close and far away, a place Five calls “the Other Side.” Even when she’s where she belongs in Sornieth, she can peek through the cracks in the universe that let the creatures there inside, creatures like the Shade. Find a large enough crack and she can step through entirely. The other Shade hunters in the Chase aren’t too thrilled with letting her go through, but they all have to admit her abilities are unlike anything they’ve seen any other dragon exhibit.

Like a Wind dragon, Five can move or lift almost anything no matter the size. Like a Water dragon, her vision reaches. Like a Shadow dragon, the dark is light to her.

The Shade isn’t the only creature inhabiting this Other Side, though it is the largest and most dangerous. As the old stories tell, the only thing that managed to push it back where it came from was the teamwork of the eleven most powerful beings dragons know of. Attracted by the light and energy, the Shade strains against the loosely-held magic bonds keeping the Other Side on its side. Five can close the cracks in the universe, but if a god’s pillar will not last, a dragon’s patchwork on the seams of the sky won’t last either.

Five either is or was an Ice dragon. She works to preserve Sornieth, so perhaps there’s something of the Icewarden in her after all. Mostly forgotten what it’s like to be a dragon untouched by the Other Side’s influence, Five does her best to fit in and help where she’s able. She might be the only thing that can.

Even though Five senses something dark and foreboding about Cyclone, even though it could be said with a fair amount of accuracy that Cyclone saved Five’s life. From what, Cyclone doesn’t have any real idea. Cyclone never imagined the Shade in the way Five describes, but she feels in her heart that it’s true, and Five knows that there’s something else in her heart as well. An admiration of sorts. Only a truly powerful creature could give eleven gods so much trouble. Only a truly powerful creature could be truly… worthy.

Cyclone wasted no time introducing Five to Derecho, her half-sister, after her discovery. Derecho, being just a tad bit crazy, was thrilled to find out everything Five had to say━but equally dismayed to find there was so much more they didn’t know. Not only that, but Derecho had been wrong in all her theories before, as well. Derecho now maps the Other Side where the Shade rules with Five’s help, marking the cracks spread across Sornieth like an antique clay pot. So much to know, Derecho laments, and not enough time to find it out.

Some Talonok lose their minds with too much curiosity for darker things, but some lose their minds to darker things’ curiosity for them. The Tengu constantly hanging around near Five is one of those crazy-but-not-quite individuals. Though he was once shackled to the place the Shade lives, he broke free with his own (and some others) volition, earning him the name Will. Though he doesn’t have the abilities Five has, he can always tell when the Shade is close. It still speaks to him. Will often wonders if he isn’t still crazy.

» Like her original first name, Five can’t remember what her surname is and has no desire to have one.

» Since emerging unscathed from the Other Side, Five carefully protects her brother and her newfound friends and enjoys eating various confections, especially waffles.

» Due to long spans of time in what one might call “civilized” territory, Five is no kind of orator. When she speaks, she uses small words and simple sentences. One would be wise not to mistake her lack of communication for lack of intellect or power.
