ejmi0PU.gif History
xx"Far from here, there is a place covered in darkness. Clanging of metal echoes off every wall, the scent of ash and flame is inescapable, and the suffocating heat is almost unbearable. The exhausted, effortful grunts of the forgeworkers and the shrieks of periodically released steam fill the cavern, creating a cacophony of constant noise that would drive any dragon mad. Especially those who were working tirelessly, every day and every hour, to forge.
xxTrapped underground, refused the sun, refused the fresh air of the outside. 'You should be more than comfortable here, we are always reminded. 'Fire burns within you. You are a boiling cauldron, and being so close to the Flamecaller's heart should empower you.'
xxBut there were those who did not want this life. To spend day after day hammering, digging, building, panting, sweltering, melting away into nothingness. Letting their scales grow calloused, pained; growing physically stronger, yes, but with such a strain that it always felt... unlivable. Slowly, ever so gradually, wearing us down into dust. There was a guardian who wanted to leave."
xx"And that was you, right, Ransom?"
xx"Oh, a smart one now, aren't you, child?" There is a pleased bout of giggling.
xx"Yes, yes, it was me. There is only so much work one can withstand before they wish to see the sun again. To return to the surface. To breath in something other than smoke. Not only that, I wanted to see the water. I had heard stories since I was a hatchling of guardians, oracles in the making, making a pilgrimage to the Shoredeep Presage to hear the words of the Tidelord. I wanted nothing more than to see it for myself."
xx"But you're fire!"
xx"I know. And I learned quite quickly how my ambition could go awry. Eventually, after years of toiling, I was tired. I was past my limit. I didn't want to continue any further.
xxAnd, despite harsh reprimands and a series of protests from my forgemaster, I left. I crawled out of that hole in the ground and saw the sun again, for the first time in years. My scales were coated with soot, turned completely black from my time underground. I couldn't wait to fix this, through my first goal as a newly freed dragon: Swimming."
xx"No!"
xx"Yes. I was determined. I was going to dive into the ocean. It's all I ever wanted to do."
xx"But it would hurt!"
xx"Yes. And it did. A lot."
xx"You actually did it?!"
xx"Of course I did. Not only that, I swam for a long time. I swam out into open water, I swam down and underneath the Tangled Wood, I surfaced again on the shore of the Labyrinth. It was exhilarating. My scales shone blue again. They glimmered, even, reflecting the sunlight in an... unnatural way. As you might have guessed, there are repercussions to fire dragons submerging themselves in water. Let alone for such a long period of time. When I dragged myself onto the shore, I was pretty much done for. Steam billowed off of me in massive clouds, and though my scales were intact, it felt as though they'd been completely extinguished. All the fire that once coursed through me, pulsed every time I struck metal with hammer, roared with the flames of the forge... Well, suffice to say, it was pretty much gone."
xx"Did you die?"
xx"Sadly, yes." The hatchlings looked horrified.
xx"But I lived! I managed to drag myself quite a ways off the shore, actually, into the safety of a cave. I collapsed there in the entrance, feeling the cool stone beneath my scales, and...
xxWell, that's when Bird found me. I can't imagine how she felt in that situation. A washed up fire dragon, devoid of fire, looking like a limp wet rag. Yet surprisingly content, despite his circumstances."
xx"And she saved you, right? She saved you like a hero!"
xx"Yes, she did. By nothing short of a miracle, she saved me. And I, of course, will forever be grateful for that. For if she hadn't, I wouldn't be here now, bothering all you kids with some old man's stories; and Flamecaller forbid that, right?"

xxIn an arrangement that is starting to become increasingly familiar, Bird finds herself resting against one of Ransom's paws, the closest to the end of her cave she can get without actually leaving, while Ransom himself sits just outside it, fire eyes big and full of wonder as he takes in the great big sky and ocean.
xxBird doesn't understand, not really. How can he love the outside so much? Doesn't he know of the dangers it holds? But then, how could he understand her need to stay in the smallest place possible, where it's nice and cozy? The two of them are incredibly different in many aspects, Bird is learning, and this is something she has come to appreciate over the weeks Ransom has been with her.
xxAnd speaking of cozy, Ransom feels like the gentlest of fires, warming her up and giving her a feeling of safety she hasn't felt since her rosebush burned away. Bird wonders, will his heat grow stronger the more he recovers? She doesn't know how she feels about that. Ever since that drought, Bird never really liked summer and its impossibility hot days, the fear of another drought always in the back of her mind.
xxBut then again… she looks up, watching his jaw glint in the sunlight, already so much less dull. Perhaps, she wouldn't mind it, Ransom's fire. Her first true companion she ever had, one so kind and understanding, not to mention gorgeous, as him, Bird thinks she would be willing to work past her fears for this dragon.
xx“And what are you staring at?” He grunts out, eyes moving almost like he is forcing himself to look away from the sky to look at her. But there is mirth in his eyes, and Bird doesn't miss the way his breath catches at the sight of her.
xx“Of course, at you. What else could I see? No sight is so captivating as yours.”
xxGoodness. Bird isn't sure where, exactly, she learned to speak like this. This is the first dragon she ever interacted with! Of course, she was shy, at the start. But it melted away so fast, it surprised even herself.
xxHowever she gained this ability, she doesn't care. It's worth it to have, when it makes Ransom blush such a pleasing shade as he guffs out a laugh. She barely pays attention to his response, stuck as she is on the sound of it.
xxHer response still comes on instinct, and it seems so does his. The conversation goes on, for so long that even Bird, having her sight of the outside blocked by Ransom's enormous body, can tell that the light in the sky goes dim. And the longer their conversation goes, the more they learn about each other, the more Bird realizes how strikingly similar, they both are.
xxSo similar, and yet so different. It only makes Bird all the more certain this is a dragon she wants to spend her life with it.
