Biography

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

--Langston Hughes

The first thing Freeze could remember was two dragons whispering over her head. They carried her carefully in their arms as they winged away from their clan under the shielding cover of night.

She was new out of her egg, only two days old. She could feel the two dragons' fear vibrating around her. She squeaked softly for their attention, but they didn't seem to hear her over their own hushed voices. Instead, Freeze turned her eyes towards the stars. The midnight blue sky matched the color of her own scales. And it was cold, delightfully cold. She reached out her small talons, and noticed for the first time that her dark blue scales glittered with frosty stars.

The dragons carrying Freeze suddenly swooped downward, landing in the snow beneath a forest of towering evergreens and sending up a great cloud of white powder. They set Freeze down, and she looked up at them, blinking her pale blue eyes serenely.

"Stay here," one of them murmured firmly.

The smaller one stared at Freeze. "What if it can't even understand us?" They shivered. "Let's just get out of here. It's better not to be seen."

The first dragon looked back at Freeze hesitantly. Freeze noticed how much larger he was than her, and how different from her he looked. He was huge and dark red, and his body was thin and long, twisting around and around in floating swirls. The other dragon was smaller, her scales were pale grey, and she carried a pearl in the curve of her tail.

"You can't possibly be feeling pity for this thing," the grey dragon hissed. "It's a monster. If we're near it any longer, it could kill us. You know what it is. Cursed blood, unholy blood. Let's go."

The twisty dragon tore his gaze away. "Right," he said simply. "Let's go. We're not supposed to linger, if the legends are true. The beasts will come for her soon enough, and we don't want to be here when they do."

The two dragons turned, unfurled their wings, and flew away, buffeting Freeze with a miniature snowstorm. She lifted her talons again, loving the bitter coldness of it.

She sat there for a long time, blinking against the bright white glare off the snow as she wondered why they had left her behind.

After a while, something began to feel different. A deep, primal sense of danger rose from deep inside of Freeze. Her eyes wide, she glanced around fearfully, then buried herself into the snow, letting the beautiful cold envelop her in a protective embrace.

As she waited in silence, the ground began to rumble. Deep, heavy earthquakes pounded the ground. There were massive paws stalking out of the woods, coming closer.

Freeze was petrified with fear. There was something whispering in her mind, a static, echo of a voice she didn't know. Freeze. Hide. Stay safe. Freeze shivered slightly in terror as she heard one of the gigantic trees crack and fall under the talons of something huge. Hear them. Don't let them. They smell you.

The ground vibrated roughly under the gigantic creature's lumbering. For a moment, it stopped.

And then, as if it had heard the warning voice in Freeze's mind:

"I smell it."

It was a deep, guttural growl, creaking coldly from within an ancient throat.

"Shaaaaade," hissed another voice. Freeze heard snuffling from somewhere close above her. She could barely breathe. "Shade blood. Yesss.... Gatekeeper."

There was another long pause full of tense silence.

And then massive talons snatched Freeze out of the snow.

The hatchling shrieked, struggling, her wings pinned in the grasp of a massive white dragon with glowing, empty eyes.

And Freeze discovered the meaning of her name.

As her mouth opened in a terrified roar, a bright blue light pulsed away from her. Entire trees seemed to seize in reaction, bars of pixelated color shaking through their once real branches. An explosion of snow flew up from the ground, as if even it was trying to get away from her, only for it to halt in the air. Millions of tiny snowflakes stood suspended by nothing. The massive, fur-covered dragons that had come for her had their forms shaken by pixelation, and for a moment, they froze still as well. But it did not affect them for more than a second.

The white dragon narrowed its eyes. "Shade magic not work on me, glitch dragon," he rumbled like a thunderstorm. "Gaoler made to deal with your kind."

And the two dragons vanished into the cold night, taking Freeze with them and leaving the forest forever scarred by Freeze's magic.

They took her deep underground, into an ice prison. Freeze was full of fear, despite the bitter cold she found so pleasing. This place was dark, and emanated such a wrongness that it sickened her to her very bones. The voice in her head screamed DANGER! DANGER! and then it was torn from her head, as if it wasn't welcome here.

Freeze was locked away in icy chains in the dark. She grew up there, alone. She was small for an Imperial, even as an adult. Her midnight scales glimmered brighter with the powerful runes that she had once mistaken for stars. Thick ice like stone spread across the edges of her wings, gluing her rusted chains to her body. Snowflakes glimmered all around her, suspended in time. Freeze wasted away in the deep depths of her prison, her pale eyes glowing hatefully in the dark.

One day, something changed, and light found its way into the prisons. Her chains fell away, except for those that were fused by ice to her scales. The Gaolers were gone. Hesitantly, the shivering Imperial clawed her way to the surface, and she was nearly blinded when she saw sunlight again. She might never understand what had made it happen, but at last, she was free.

In time, she found dragons. Kind dragons, who melted some of the hateful ice that had grown around her heart. Freeze found something warm inside of herself. There were those who knew she wasn't a monster. She hadn't chosen the dark power that surged through her veins.

Freeze settled down with them, staying far away from the others to ensure their safety. Her powers could be violent and erratic, unpredictable. But at last, she had a home, when all she had ever known was the dark of a prison whose very stones throbbed with their hatred of her and her Shade-touched blood.
