The sands were like time itself disintegrating and drifting from the beat of her wings. The desert sun was high overhead, glaring down at the desolate world around her, like an ant under a magnifying glass. The air was sticky and left her mouth as tasteless as the dunes, yet she kept going. Was she making any progress? Did this great sea of heat and sediment ever end? Was time even ticking still?

She dropped out of the air and landed to catch her breath, hot sand pooling between her talons and sticking to the sweat on them. One wing was out to shield her gaze from the harsh sun, while the other hung tiredly at her side. She'd come so far, flown for so long, yet even a creature born of the flames of creation could only stand so much heat.

Panting, she squinted out at the horizon, trying to see past the mirages that the heat tried to play with. Her waterskin was down to its last few drops, and she could see no signs of an aquifer nor oasis. Surely she was not the only desert creature in the Far Lands. But her chest heaved with a sigh, and she paused a moment longer to catch her breath before hurtling back into the air, scraping against the dry drafts.

She would soon make her way to an outlander outpost, where she would find new work in a far far away clan— perhaps even a new home.
