THE FIRST GENE;
Birch acquired her first gene upon reaching the tenth level of arcane magicks. Mattin had watched as she leveled up, saw the strength and purpose now in each movement of the young Gaoler (who was regarded as a Tundra by the rest of the tribe) and declared "It is time." "Time for what?" She replied, jumping onto the great creature's back as it rose. Her claws dug into the gaps between the old Ridgeback's scales, but not enough to do any harm. "It is time.. for you to gain your first Pattern." At this, great excitement! Only recently had Birch watched Myriad gain her own new genes. The Mirror had once been covered in soft white 'lace', with transparent membranes. Now, she was resplendent in boldly splotched wings, bone etchings in her scales, and Birch was jealous. "What will it be? What will I look like?" "That is to be seen. Remember, though, that Arcturius holds a plan for you- the optimal look. You picked this yourself, as a hatchling." With that, the Ridgeback would speak no more, despite Birch's constant prodding and nagging. It was a long flight, so long that by the time they landed, Birch's claws ached. The area around them was full of old stone. For a long moment, the only sound was the rustling membrane of Mattin's wings folding. Then, a snout poked out from a crack in the wall, and after a second was followed by a striped head with curious horizontal eyes. The tiny Spiral looked up at their two huge guests, then wriggled the rest of the way out of their block and flew to sit atop Mattin's horns. They spoke with feverish anticipation, "So! You've brought your little one, we see, and we see that she is ungened! Such a shame-" Here they paused to cluck sympathetically - "But we can fix that, yes yes! Come along, little one, what is your name? No mind," they giggled and continued before Birch could introduce herself, "Let's just get you something pretty, yes yes!" They crawled down Mattin's great neck, glided to rest in Birch's woollen fur, and pointed her along the way to an old shed. Inside were stacks upon stacks of scrolls, but the Spiral flitted past them all. "Something special for you, little one, yes yes! We has something quite unique!" And with that, they pulled a chest from beneath a pile of tottering Morph patterns. Shaking with eagerness, they fumbled for one of the many keys that jingled about their neck, and opened it. Inside, half eaten with mould and covered in dust, lay a single scroll. It was barely the size of Birch's paw, but the Spiral picked it up with great reverence and crawled up to her head. "And now... we apply! Yes yes, we give you the Scroll!" Chittering happily, the half-mad dragon began to chant, each word making Birch feel dizzier and dizzier, until finally she fell, unconscious, to the floor. And, well, that was the end of that. |

THE SECOND GENE; Birch's second gene was acquired thanks to Liandron's nephew messing with the blind Pearlcatcher's equipment. He had been asked to brew a Pinstripe for an old friend's sibling, but the hatchling's interference caused the gene to become something entirely different. She walked in on the Pearlcatcher leaning over his cauldron, holding his glasses in an attempt to make out the form within. Next to him was Leo, the insane spiral that had given her the gene known as Streak. Said spiral jumped, twisting in the air and flying over to curl around her antlers as they began to chatter. "You won't believe it, yes yes! Lia has created something quite new, quite strange!" "And what would it be, Leo?" She replied politely. It was impossible to ignore the spiral, and a bad idea to be crude to them. "Pinstripe... with a twist, yes yes! It has extra Magyk, ancient Magyk. I think," Leo leaned over to look her in the eye, making themselves seem upside-down, "that it will fit you quite nicely, yes yes!" With a gleeful cackle, the spiral twisted away from Birch completely and pulled a strange scroll from the goop in the cauldron. Wiping some of the sludge off, they looked over at Birch and grinned. "Ready!" She nodded, excitement curling in her gut at the thought of gaining more patterns. "Ready." |
