Maybe she just couldn't be the dragon she admired. Her wings drooped as she left the room, turning the crown over and over in her claws as if she were merely flipping a coin. If only I were smarter, she thought. Faster, cleverer. If I could hone my magic more, how much more useful would I be to my clan, my friends, to myself? I just want to be loved. These ancient ruins brought a strange sense of comfort to her. She brushed her clawtips against the chiselled marble, a few pieces breaking at the touch, pattering down like snow. Gold twisted around pillars like huge pythons, snaking up to meet in a starburst on the partially collapsed ceiling high above. Whoever once lived here was clearly very powerful and influential, and her wings shivered in recognition of standing in what likely was an important piece of history. She stepped out into the filtered rays of sunlight, the sunset casting long shadows over the wearied icefields. Two worlds seemed to collide here - the richly adorned, elaborate towers and high rise buildings sweeping against sprawling camps littered with shattered weaponry and long extinguished torches. She was on the bridge of a turnover, some sort of change that happened aeons ago. Her feet ached from trudging over rough lands the whole day though, and she knew it was getting late. She had to return home before long. She looked down at the crown in her hands again. It, surprisingly, was almost in pristine condition. She placed a claw on the fins, hesitating. Would it be an abomination if she were to wear the crown of a possible previous queen? Probably. And to move it from it's place too... She turned to head back to the room and replace it. And that was when she first heard it. Stay... The subtle whisper that sent ice crawling down her spine, the voice of the demon that she didn't know would soon haunt her for the rest of her life. From the moment her scales brushed against that crown, she'd cursed her fate. Just let me in.
