Biography

zRba1D1.gif Hex

Depthless, unending emptiness stared up at the sky. Not tears, but something else dripped from the sockets where normal eyes would have been expected, staining the earth that the tundra sat upon. Surprisingly, the black liquid did not stain the soft creamy pink of his thick fur. It made an effort to stain anything it touched, save for the dragon that produced it. Hex had learned to keep his face shaded from view, even if he left evidence of being there when his eyes dripped. For the most part none truly noticed the state in which the tundra’s pupils were in, save of course for a few here and there and his parents.

The eyes that held the sight of the world and all its wonders were the same ones that had left the dragon abandoned in the dark ruins. They had prayed and prayed to be blessed with a child of their own, but when their son hatched from their egg they realized they had been cursed. Hex was so young when he was left to die in the ruins, only opening his mouth to wail out for anyone but soon coughing as the dark liquid pooled in his mouth and choked at his lungs. This was the end he’d been condemned to by his birth parents, and if a a beast found the sight of the hatchling not appetizing enough to take a chance he would wither away. It seemed that had been his lot in life, though too young to understand it, and so he lay in the dark and waited.

His waiting did not take too long, as eventually the dragon that would become known as Hex was found. The nocturne that peered down at the young tundra originally had turned her face in disgust. Those damned eyes stared up at her, dripping with their ooze and vastly unending. It was unnerving, it was disgusting. It almost made her walk away.

“Poor thing,” she muttered down at the hatchling. “Sentenced to a slow death in these ruins.” there had been some mulling over in the nocturne’s mind, and though the dragon she stared down at was too young to understand that his fate hung in her final decision, something moved her to scoop him up regardless.

“The world will always cast you out. It’s best you remember this even so young.” she warned, wrapping him in a shawl to hide his eerie gaze from any that may spot them as she took flight from the ruins. “And it’s important you understand the new chance at life I have afforded you, Hex.” Perhaps assigning a name so soon would be her downfall in regards to the tundra, but it slipped from her tongue before much thought could be afforded.

As the hatchling finally settled under her watch, Rumele the nocturne flew them east of the ruins. She needed an assistant anyways, she reasoned, and he was young enough that he would come to grow into his place under her. Rumele had never had children of her own, not in her past life nor now. But this discarded creature and his weeping black eyes had caught something her she thought impossible and therefore refused to give thought. It almost seemed fitting that she would be gifted the young tundra, as if a sign from her God. She smiled, accepting such a gift.

Under the rigorous gaze of his adopted guardian, Hex grew unquestionably loyal and committed to serving her. He learned the right words to draw in crowds, grew accustomed to the melodies Rumele could create that gained her loyal followers. He was the utmost best disciple for the nocturne as he could be, though in her presence he was far more reserved and even a bit weak. No matter for Rumele, as long as the tundra followed her instructions and aided in their spread of her brand of ‘gospel’ he earned his keep, even if his attachment to her could be quite bothersome to the nocturne.

Hex turned his gaze from where he had been staring, hearing the voices of other dragons coming up the hill. They stopped short at the sight of the hooded tundra, before smiling and waving at him.

“Oh, Hex! You made it here already!” they called. He nodded and smiled, standing as he ushered them towards the sitting area that had been arranged around the dead tree. It was where Rumele planned on performing that evening, and so Hex had been tasked with waiting and greeting all that arrived and made sure they were seated well before the nocturne appeared. She would not have any stragglers near the back, no. Hex had nodded at her orders and waited, but the first did not arrive until nightfall. It gave him the opportunity to enjoy the sight of the dark skies, much like his first memories before he had been taken in by his mistress.

“Of course, I’ve been preparing for my lady’s show.” he hummed in response. The darkness of the night also shaded his eyes, giving him enough time to tug the hood over a little more before he lit the lanterns on either side of the pathway. He nodded at the empty seats.

“You’re the first to arrive. Please, sit. When all have gathered I will let my lady know.”

“We didn’t want to miss her performance tonight!” they replied. Hex let out a soft laugh along with their own.

“You never miss nights when we are traversing through.” he noted approvingly. The dragons in attendance were quite proud themselves, nodding in response. Then, more came up the hill, followed by others. They did not carry any lights with them, as was expected. The shows that Rumele put on were expected to be kept dim until she arrived to perform, as the nocturne found the light pollution bothersome.

More dragons filtered up the hill until the seats were filled and then some. Most if not the entire clan had arrived, murmuring in excitement in the dimness of the light while they waited. It was like this in most of the places that the duo stopped in, Rumele taking up residence in an inn or borrowed home within the clan or village after showing her skills and wooing the hearts of many. If she had stopped there before then they did not need to prove anything, offered comfortable lodging immediately. Hex would then go about the clan and stir up the excitement while the nocturne dozed and prepared, enjoying gifts from her followers until her performance that night. Sometimes she would not always perform, though she did enjoy the cheering and adoration. Even Hex would be spotted amongst the throngs, content and happy to serve her. And he was content, even if he found himself a little petrified to ever cross his mistress. There was something underneath that fear, something akin to what he imagined a child had for a mother, even if he never knew if it truly was that.
