Gold Ore Moonstone

» One day, I will create a blueprint of the universe. «

Decimus was distracted by the clicking and whirring of his joints as they approached the building. Its exterior was bland and austere, but he stepped into the vast room with its dappled light and vaulted ceilings and stared with awe. There was a softly humming structure of suspended gel medium and liquid crystal before him. It rotated slowly on its axis, shimmering faintly, grey on gold.

Gold.

The same colour as his new body.

His guide, the head engineer Nadine, seemed both amused and pleased at his wonderment. "Beautiful display, isn't it? Very versatile. A nice, easy interface that most laymen can work with." She fluttered over to the control desk and began tapping away. "'Course, it took a while to get to this point. All the necessary trappings insisted upon by her. Well, lucky you, eh?"

Lucky. Yes. Very lucky.

More clicking at the buttons, and the cube split into neat vertical slices, clean and clear. They hovered for a moment, then spread themselves the length of the chamber, leaving enough space for an imperial such as herself to walk between each. As one block rippled past him, he reached out a gold-plated arm to brush at the edge; it molded around his questing claws like fresh silk in the breeze.

State-of-the-art technology.

"As magnificent as this is, I was told I would be provided with traditional drafting tools as well...?" he ventured hesitantly.

"Of course. Your workshop has been all set up for you, but you'll definitely need this, considering the ah, concept itself. Can't plan impossible shapes with chalk and paper, yes?"

"Mm, you would be correct. And the material samples?"

Nadine gestured to the rack of vials and pile of crates set up at the far end of the hall. "All there. Strange properties and weird mechanisms that I'll leave you to figure out with that lovely brain of yours."

Ah, yes - his brain. His architect's brain and his ability to live in the liminal world of pure mathematics and shapes and forms and how they all aligned.

He had enjoyed it. And he had enjoyed all of the praise and benefits while they had lasted.

But now, this was why they wanted him. He had made beautiful things, extraordinary things, and so some had considered him the best in the region, perhaps even the world. He did not think that it would matter, not like this-

"Don't worry," she continues, "all Garden extracts have been rendered in their safe forms, or so they tell me. You want anything in larger quantities, you go ask the ladies in the tower, got it? We're down by the river, but not allowed out of here, same as you."

Trapped, trapped, trapped, all of them-

"Certainly. Is there anything else?"

"Well, some of us will be popping in to check on your progress, keep you alive and all. Your room is by your workshop and there's a nice area out the back if you need some fresh air. All amenities are down that corridor on the left. Start here, though." She gestured at the pile of resources stacked next to her.

"I suppose I should give these a look, then." Decimus headed over to the desk filled with thick books and preliminary blueprints.

"I suppose you should. Oh, and before I forget-" She fished a flask of coffee and a boxed slice of spice cake, only slightly squashed and topped generously with cream and honey, out of her satchel. "Happy birthday, dear. Welcome to our team for the foreseeable future."

After all of that time in the darkness, after all the changes and metal and exquisite latticework sprouting through his flesh, he had forgotten.

"Thank you."

She left and closed the door behind her with a soft metallic sound.

Not locked, then.

He eyed the bright machine warily as he made himself comfortable and helped himself to the food and some scrap notepaper.

He was lucky to have these luxuries at all, after two months of defiance and struggle. Then two more locked away and forgotten. And then the Process... It was an indescribable relief to see sunlight again, good to have paper back in his hands. Even if those hands were segmented in unfamiliar ways and gleamed strangely in the light.

His was a small price to pay. He was not hurting anyone. It was just another tricky avant-garde project, never mind the particular person behind it. And the implants had made him into something that many of his ilk would have loved. He was safer, less likely to be injured like this. It was simple enhancement. Cybernetics was, after all, the future.

His family would have been ashamed of him.

The coffee was much too bitter, the dessert far too sharp and sweet. He felt slightly sick. Perhaps he should stick to electricity capsules in the future.

Cold guilt and saccharine insincerity collided as he charted out the beginnings of a fractal palace.
