"....."

One of the few dragons hatched with the not-quite-drowned and raised by their alchemists, Vadr and Velkim, Elarian has grown to be everybody's darling. He loves to perch on larger dragons, watching them work their crafts, and they gladly let him, answering his questions.

While he knows the basics, he does not really want to pursue his parents' career, instead preferring the stories he also grew up with. If the work of a scribe is needed, he'll gladly be of service, nimbly writing down messages to foreign clans in his neat and flowing writing. Lately, he has been dabbling in some writing of his own. Stories don't come that easily to him, but once he has heard one, he likes to embellish it with details, change the pace to make it more dramatic or fit it into verse, something he is quite talented at.

His favourite way to spend an evening is huddled up under Vadr's wings at a gathering of the storytellers, listening to their tales and trying to persuade Velkim to tell one of his own.

Sometimes his small fae shape made him a little nervous and skittish, and he's wished more than once he instead had the same sleek form as his parents. Now that he is a little older, he's been gifted a scroll of change, and his wing feathers have darkened while the glow of his magic has grown stronger.

Despite the unforeseen dramatic events, Vadr did not regret having visited the Waltz. He was happy to have been of help with Maria’s rescue and had been deeply moved by the siblings’ thanks.
The fight had been exhaustive, and he’d gladly taken his time to rest, thankful for the attention of the many competent healers, which had done wonders for the constant pain beneath his ribs. He’d felt rather comfortable, enjoying the last day of the festivities, even daring to dance a few steps around the twins.
Now that it was time to leave, however, he had to admit that he was looking forward to returning to his home clan, the calm of the depths. As he was gathering up his luggage with the shy help of his new familiar, an Oceansurf Magus that had been tamed by Maria - how proud he was of her! - one thing weighed on his mind: The egg that he had carefully wrapped in a few towels.
He had found it in the underground caves, and it had been the general consensus that it should stay with him. It was a known thing to happen, lost eggs that got found again, been in their shell for so long they lost every pattern they might have had, with no way to trace their parents. (Though some said they were the lost children of the gods, or used a similar turn of phrase to indicate that hatchlings from these eggs had no true parents.)

Gathering it up carefully, he turned it in his claws. Was it moving, or was that just his wishful imagination?
Domesticity was a thing he treasured highly, and while he had a clan to call home, and a loving partner, children were quite another thing. His own innate magic was somewhat warped, and as it seemed, quite incompatible. Perhaps this egg was a gift from the Tidelord?

He discarded any ideas about giving it to one of the many hatcheries that took care of such lost dragons, or any other clan until he had spoken to his mate about it.

To his delight, Velkim was more than happy to discuss the possibility of raising a hatchling, talking him out of all his concerns and anxieties. "Dear, remember when we had that young apprentice? I was so proud of you, seeing how you cared for the little Bogsneak. And we'd have the clan's full support."
It was true, on the rare occasions that a lost egg had been found, it would first be offered to the mated couples of the clan, asking if any of them would want to take it in. The last offer had been years ago though, and he had not felt ready then. Nevertheless, the clan was very supporting of pairs deciding to care for hatchlings, as the majority of their clan's growth was due to newcomers from the outside, and so any dragon hatched and reared in the lair was something special to them.

He smiled, tension loosening. "Why, I had not expected you to be so ....prepared. I'd have thought that'd give you quite a surprise!"
Velkim just smiled back at him. "Dear. Not in a clan of oracles and seers. Undrowned came to see me just this morning, walked around the laboratory, watched my work, until she stated that I would make a fine parent and left again. That gave me a bit of a hint."

***

The egg hatched just a day later, and it seemed to everyone involved as if it had only been waiting for its new clan's approval.
As Vadr watched the young Fae in awe and listened to the small noises it made, instinctively trying to crawl closer to his new family, he almost missed his mate's question over all the happy coos from the gathered clan members. "A name. What should he be named?" Velkim asked, gently nudging the young one with his snout, which got him a happy squeak.

As he watched, entranced, Vadr remembered a young nocturne with dreams larger than the skies and an imagination that would paint them, and her valiant sister, fearless in defense of her loved ones, and the name formed on his tongue.
"What do you think about ... Elarian?"
