A Tale of Greetings Swapped

I settle in my hub, my shaggy fur a pale contrast to the luscious cavern I call home. I can hear the sound of soft ripples in the little ponds around me, nestled safely in my pile of plushies. My precious hainu is by my side, sleeping with an icewarden plushie in his jaws. It's quiet, perhaps for the first time in days. And yet I know it won't last. The Summer Sphinx Sprint is today, and all of the Wanderers and Archivists will want to know more. I turn to watch the second moon dip below the horizon, wondering who will call first when a fountain starts to spray to my left.

There, standing in a pool decorated with delicate lanterns and a tree stump, is a massive fox. Nine tails sweep around a sandy coat, tipped in shadow. And yet, those darkened wings are tipped in gold, shimmering in the light. She looks at me in my pile, finally speaking up.

"Our festivities are coming to a close for the turn of the summer solstice. The festival shiro went all out this year, and foxfires helped to put on quite the light show! I believe that crystal recorder worked for it, and for the Night Shiro's performance." The kitsune manages a rather toothy grin, her heterochromatic eyes alight as she shuffles her paws. "What of your Archivists? I know some of our... less fortunate Kitsune are in your care, and Akemi left early to enjoy your own festivities. Is everything alright?" I smile back at the older drake, or really the Tenko, nodding my head.

"She arrived at port yesterday, right on schedule. She seems fond of helping our confectioner, Razael, with his summertime sweets. She's made enough to bring some back to all of you when our own holiday comes to a close. She wants to bring back a Summer Sphinx, but we'll have to wait and see about that. As for your Limbo kin, they've settled well. Some have even taken up work with the Grand Archivists, helping them in their fields or learning their own specialties. The foxfire that came back here is even helping make sure our gardens are cut off from any stray sphinxes for the sprint today. He's on standby with the Herbology course in case anyone is injured." I can see tension leave the Cursed Tenko's shoulders as she nods her head. After a few more reassurances, and an estimate as to how long it'll be before her courier can contact her again, I end the projection spell with Reiko.

I barely manage a soft sigh when another fountain springs to life to my right, causing me to jump with a startled rumble. There in the mist, surrounded by stray planks and hanging ropes and pulleys, is a Wildclaw half my size. Dark scars mar her arm and hip, a pale contrast to the slash over her patched eye. A brightly adorned sword is tucked beneath tatters and pouches of gemstones gathered along her journeys on the high seas. In the background, I can see ropes connecting her ship to others. The head of a massive creature can be seen ducking just out of view from the cabin windows as Lila, the captain of the Blood Pearl, speaks up.

"I know it's been a bit since we came t' port, an' there's the sprint goin' on today, but we've come across a bit o' a problem wit' the Blood Pearl and one of our... crew members. Jus' another delay. Y'know how it goes with the moon cycles an' the tides. Mind warnin' the others our shipment o' Sphinx Snacks will be late?" I can hear a faint growling noise from the other side of the projection, alongside some sharp cries of other drakes as they seemingly try to wrangle something in. I can hear the other Cardinals crying out to their own crews as something slams into the door to the cabin, claws scraping on wood. Before I can reply, Lila snaps back. "I jus' got that door fixed from the las' time you went an' scratched it up, you moon-blasted waste o' supplies! I swear if your leviathan goes an' breaks the rudder one more time...!" I watch as her image walks away from the spray, leaving a view of the cabin once more. I can hear the door slam as the Wildclaw joins in on the fray, likely trying her best to calm Zircon and the beast he's bound to down on time for the summer swing. After the leviathan bound to the Blood Pearl peeks in once more, I decide to simply relay the message. I end the projection right as a furred muzzle breaks into the cabin, leaving the echo of an angry cry in it's wake.

I turn to yet another pool, this one with a metallic inlay of silver and amethyst gemstones on an onyx platform. One tap sets off the spray, revealing a bit of a surprise. I know better than to speak out about what I see that likely was meant to be kept private, but the two gate keepers of the port and the Spire chattering away in one of their dens isn't what I'd thought I'd see today. Orphiel, the energetic Spiral, is twisted about Ezekiel's pearl, chattering away about some of the events he wants to try and see. It looks like the two are planning to exchange some of their shift hours so they can attend events during the sprint. Finally the stoic Pearlcatcher spots me, his eyes widening at the sight. Black feathers and white, the very thing many Archivists and Scholars frown upon for even considering the notion, and it's right on display. I simply lift my talon in a shushing motion, then nod my head.

"I just wanted to inform you that the Cardinals will be late. One of their... curses, I believe, has gone on a bit of a spree. They should be here by sun high, but I can't guarantee it." As the two simply nod to me, I manage my brightest smile yet. "I can post some extra guards port-side through the Crystal Watch if you wish to attend the festivities together. It should be easy enough to claim it as a coincidence." There's a moment of silence before, finally, Ezekiel nods his head once more. It seems they'll accept my offer. As I begin to turn away, I can see just how fast Orphiel is in his desperate attempt to shut down the misty projection in their den. I decide that the two deserve their privacy, shaking my shaggy head as the fountain goes silent. I turn back to my plushie pile, longingly wishing I could simply lay back down and rest these scorching days away. And yet, I know better.

I am Nina, the Gaoler in charge of communications between the heads of each hub, and I know my work is far from over. I have many things to attend to yet, and the day has only just begun. At least my trusty hainu, Alexander, is by my side. I don't know what I'd ever do without him.

As you look around the makeshift cavern, you cannot help but notice the odd nature of this Gaoler. Every Wanderer points you to her cavern first if you don't know her name. It seems she's meant to greet you. But what happens when she's with one group of Wanderers, and others visit the other clans? Who greets them? This is supposed to be a Gaoler's home, and yet inside there's a seemingly decorative pool of water, a nest with old plushies, and even some bioluminescent shrooms taken from the Tangled Wood, on top of other plants from around Sornieth. Decorative lairs weren't common for Gaolers, especially ones with hoards, and yet here it was. A plushie hoard with decorative pools inside a crystalline cavern hovering overhead. However, where was the dragon?

You're about to leave when the water in the pool ripples. Curious, you peer over at it. You let out a shocked gasp as the water sprays into a mist, forming the image of a rather large Gaoler with glowing yellow eyes. So. This is Nina. She seems to be able to hear you and the questions you ask, but has no means of replying with her own words. You can see her mouthing words, however, such as your name and other small snippets. It reminds you of a parrot. Finally, after some frustration, she seems to sigh. She lifts a claw, pointing to another corner of the cavern. It's a scroll, well written and neatly penned. It seems she's in charge of telling newcomers where to go. She may not be present here, but she can still greet others. As you turn to the scroll, she turns away, seemingly talking to another drake. Perhaps she has more than one fountain running? Either way, you know what to do now. You begin reading the scroll.

Hello there~! I'm Nina. I know I'm not able to talk to you right now, but that doesn't mean I can't help you find your way around. Thank goodness for Sibal and her work with projective magic~! I can tell you who to go to for specific things. If you need something from a specific Wanderer in a certain area, such as the Ophaniel, you'll need to go to their respective guides. I'm just the one to go to for things involving the Archivists in general, like the keeper of collections and the archivist of projects. If they aren't in your specific set of Archivists, don't fret! Sibal set up projections for them all if you need to speak with them. She even made ways for you to actually talk back to them! Mine's just busted. Something about the magic used to create me interfering or something? Either way, they can talk back to you if you need them. They're listed below.

Israfel here is the one to go to if you have collectables. He keeps track of the different items many of our Wanderers hoard, from deity plushies and trinkets to live animals~! He may even have something to send in return if you're looking for items to hoard yourself, as the drakes working for him often stumble across things our Wanderers don't collect themselves. If he hasn't put them on the market, he'll send them your way~! Just be mindful of his oddities. He really dove into the whole singing thing Coatls have going for them.

Liriel may be quite young in appearance, but don't let that fool you. That Sphinx is even older than me~! His love for wardrobing and attire has led him to be the keeper of apparel lists for his fellow Wanderers. They pay a fee for it mind you, if only because he lives off the continent from most Wanderers, but anything they wish to wear will often appear on his list. All his hubs tend to be quite bright, so be prepared for that. He also has quite an attitude to him, so expect a few fashion critiques as you leave as well. He may send something your way if you ask and he happens to have it, but don't expect him to do so often. After all, this really is just a hobby to him. My advice is to sit back, let him talk, answer however you can, and don't ask for anything he's guarding. Sphinxes often guard knowledge or jewels, so trying to remove one from his care... well, let's just say you'd have better luck convincing a Guardian to rid themselves of their Charge.

Ariel's a kindred spirit in many ways. She's a lover of Beastclan, and is often found chatting with our bonded familiars, if not in the process of helping other drakes bond with their own new companions. Her love of animals is infectious. I mean, two drakes in her sect of Wanderers are animal keepers on the side, one of reptiles, and one of avians~! Because of this, she's the one who holds the list of familiars all our Wanderers have yet to encounter and take in as their own. She wants that list to go away eventually, and is more than willing to chat with anyone who can help her with that quest. However, her search for familiars has led her to have multiple duplicates. If you're in need of one for your own records, she'll be more than willing to part with them. Better than sending them on their way to help the alchemists, at least in her mind. Just don't be too surprised if you meet her face to face. She's a hugger, and a strong one at that. Hope you know a good chiropractor.

Anaiel is a wonderful scholar, despite how often he tends to ramble. He actually had a lot of free time on his talons. As such, he's keeping track of the drakes who want to change their appearance with gene scrolls. His brightest apprentice took a shine to the ancients, however, and quickly took over the ancient breeds to ease the burden of keeping the lists up to date. Anaiel is doing his best to keep everything updated, but there are a lot of Wanderers, with some coming and going every day. His list would be changing every second if he updated it every time a scroll was applied or an idea changed. As such, he's told each Wanderer to stick to one plan, and will only cross a scroll off his list if it's planned and applied properly. If you have genes for modern breeds, send them his way. He can't spare much, but he might tip a few gems or treasure for genes he's looking for.

Cosmos is Anaiel's top apprentice. With plenty of effort, he's taken a piece of his mentor's gene list and recorded it for himself. All ancient breeds, as well as drakes who wish to become ancients, go to him to record their future plans. He tries his best to keep things orderly to help others look through his list if they wish to help. Like his mentor, he only adds scrolls to his list when drakes are sure about their future plans, and will only strike scrolls off when they're applied to the dragon. Even if they're sitting in a hoard connected to the wanderers. he won't strike them off. However, he'll happily accept any scrolls meant for ancient breeds. He may study them for a bit before sending them off to the drakes who need them, but they'll get to the dragon eventually. He can't spare much, but he'll be more than happy to donate to other projects if he finds them.
