Biography

tumblr_inline_o21bmtn7Oz1r3lvtf_400.png

Soft footfalls pad across the loamy earth. Grass and mulch rustle. Root and soil mingle. The dampness of a heavy spring rain still clings to the ground. Overhead, the wind sighs sweetly through the waving branches.

Once she would have heard their song as only a faint whisper. The trees had called to her from birth, but their voices had been so quiet. Only with her cheek pressed against their rough bark could she hear the distant melody.

Once the murmur of the leaves was a mere afterthought in the chorus of birdsong and creek murmur. She had always loved the willow's sway, the leaves' ripple, the pine's bristle. Yet only when the distractions of the world fell away could she hear their breathy song.

The more she heard, the more she longed to hear. Deeper and deeper into the forest she wandered. There! The rich timbre of bark scraping as it slowly grew. The reedy flutes of bulrush and cattails sang from the river. Raindrops and even dew plunked soft chords upon leaf and ground as they fell. The further she walked, the more she heard.

She dedicated her entire being to nature's song. Piece by piece she left her old life behind, until she had fully embraced the forest.

It embraced her in turn.

Slowly she began to change. Vines trailed around her limbs, trellising about her neck. Bark mingled with flesh and grew, slowly covering her form. Grass took root and drank deep of her essence. Flowers sprang up between scales and burst into bloom.

With every step the melody grew stronger, clearer. Now she could hear the tender alto of sap flowing. Deeper still lay the bass thrum of roots drinking within the earth.

Mold closed her eyes and gave herself over to the song.

Once she had heard its melody as only a faint whisper.

Now her heart beats in tune.
