obyrith’s down at the docks a lot, lately— watching the water. to absorb the magic of twenty nine souls would’ve killed her. heaven is half that number, and. well. and so some were banished to the dark places. there’s nothing here, rith, says damascena, scrubbing his hands over his eyes from where he stands at the end of the dock; you can go back to sleep, and i’ll keep watching, even, if you need me to. thank you, dear, she sighs, and presses a kiss to his collarbone (even with him tired and hunched over, it’s the only thing she can reach), but you can go to sleep too, now. it’s late in the wane, and we both should be inside. and so they leave. and deep in the water, past where vicious and ruin rest, golden-yellow eyes snap open and the water echoes with the cracking of bone. ——— they call avari unloyal, those that still talk about her kind. which is rude. unloyal would mean she’s one of the demons that tried to eschew themselves from obyrith in the early days. unloyal would mean that she would be gone, now, simply a part of the power that the paleblood empress wields. unloyal would mean that she’s a monster. avari is quite a bit worse than that. she loves obyrith. more than anything. but five staying already put such a strain on the weave, and she will not deny the flower ken their connection, and anyways twenty nine shards of power, even pressed into submission, is too much for any one person (she was so young— they all were, the ones that stayed— gods, avari doesn’t want to regret not taking some of the magical backlash for herself but maybe obyrith wouldn’t be hurting so much if she had-) she loves obyrith, and so she stays in the trenches that, invisible, separate the bay from the rest of the sea, and sometimes the seafoam washes up crimson; and dianthos warns everyone not to go out fishing today, please, it’s hunting season, and conveniently doesn’t mention what exactly is doing the hunting. if you’re out there, obyrith whispers to the sea; i’m sorry. i love you. i love you too, the sea whispers back, in the clink of pearl-oysters and the gentle wash of the tide against her skin, and obyrith mistakes it for an echo, and walks away. . |
