obyrith had thirty-four generals, once. all spirits of great power on their home planes, liches and fae marques and tanar’ri alike, all united under the banner of the paleblood. and they were /loyal/ to her. the summoning was strong in the blood of kings, and strongest by far in little obyrith, the youngest of her siblings- her father, great though he was, had only summoned twenty-six generals when his time came. it was a rite of passage, in the kingdom, for a monarch to summon their own advisors, and when obyrith’s sister pulled twenty and her brother sixteen, they were unceremoniously removed from the line of succession in favor of herself (and she was so proud of her own strength, and she thought they were too, and-) the first two demon lords betrayed her and obyrith declared herself empress, restricting her counsel only to the leanan and trickster wisps because at least she could be certain that they had no extraplanar motivations, and then all but seven went and. well. obyrith was young, and inexperienced, and she had been raised to claw at power where she could get it and damn the consequences— and so she turned to those demons that had turned against her and all taken the form of imperials, black and gold and grand as anything, and she said “this is my power, now”— and obyrith (the empress, not the girl, not anymore) sat in her empty palace as dusk began to fall and said “i’m thinking of starting an orchard.” and so she did. |
