Odisse

____________________________
FpYGiAO.png
An unwanted child, Odisse spent her young years attempting to win her mother's affections. Living in a large city in Dragonhome, Odisse never saw anything beyond the walls of the palace where her mother served as a maid. A curious, sensitive hatchling, Odisse expressed interest in the world outside of what she knew, often staring at the golden walls which formed her prison. Despite her mother's treatment, Odisse would try to help the other when she could in an attempt to earn the other's approval. One day, she was led out of the palace in the middle of the night. This was the last time she saw her mother's face as the other turned away from her, although Odisse didn't know it at the time.

She was led out of the city, where the dragon leading her and the other younglings spoke to another group who was soon ordering them to follow him. While some of the others cried or prayed, Odisse remained silent and calm, feeling distanced from her circumstances. Upon arriving at another large city, her companions soon began to disappear one by one, led off by dragons who pressed blue gems into the hands of those who had brought them here. Odisse hung back, shy and unsure of what was happening. A richly dressed pearlcatcher passed by, gaze landing on her before he softly spoke with the dragon who was in charge. After doing so, he approached Odisse, telling her to follow him.

He led the was to another sprawling mansion, however this one lacked the tall walls of the palace of her birth. Odisse was assigned to the young lady of the house, a young dragon about her age. As years passed, Odisse and the young lady grew close, Odisse forgetting the boundaries between them. She was content with her life until one night a fire started, lit by those who were unable to accept their position as slaves, no matter how well-treated. Although she saved the young lady's life, Odisse was dismissed from her position, as were all the others. Lost, she wandered far before coming across the Eternal city, pyramids raising up into the sky in front of her. Initially scavenging for food, everything changed on the day that she met Oolong. He took her into his clan and treated her with dignity and respect. It was Oolong who helped her choose her new name.

Nylea

____________________________
FpYGiAO.png
Living with Oolong was almost like a dream come true. The imperial was one of the most powerful dragons in the Eternal City and he bought Nylea everything she even expressed a slight interest in. Marrying him was the happiest day of her life, with Nylea vowing to always remember that day. It was Oolong who crafted Malakia to protect her, basing it off of the traditional protectors of Dragonhome. Nylea befriended Meridia, a local tavernkeep, and the two would often spend time together when Oolong was away with business.

Although it seemed like her life would never change, when unrest made its way to the clan she'd taken up home with Nylea couldn't help but feel that it was an inevitability. Oolong wasn't concerned about his position but, out of an abundance of caution, arranged to send Nylea away to a clan where she would be safe despite her protests. It was with reluctance that she journeyed to the Hotaru Clan, leaving her husband behind. Meridia had already left the clan, travelling off to start a new business elsewhere and so Nylea left alone.

Upon her arrival, Nylea was slightly overwhelmed by the number of dragons in her new clan. She initially stayed on the outskirts, homesick, until one day Arya approached her, asking for help with the clan's hatchlings. It took Nylea a long time to realize this was a ruse to get her to interact. She gingerly moved to help, worried that the same bitterness which had affected her mother when around her would show in her treatment of the younger dragons but instead she found a wellspring of warmth as she interacted with them, telling them stories that Oolong had told her. It helped ease some of the homesickness and Nylea began to help more throughout the clan, joining Lacie in helping tend the bar, although the other's sometimes sudden mood changes are still taking her a while to get used to.

Writing:
By: Sealterbloind, edited by me
Despite her luxurious looks, Nylea wasn't born in the life of luxury; in fact, it was pretty much the opposite. Her mother was quite poor and lived in the slums of a larger city in Dragonhome, just barely surviving by eating whatever the rich threw away. Even though her mother was poor, she was very pretty, and one day while she was begging for food and coin a wealthy dragon came to her and offered her a job in his mansion as his maid. This was an offer that she couldn't refuse, and so she packed up and followed the male dragon to his mansion, full of other maids. The other maids helped to bathe and clothed her, and she had never felt better in her whole life. She was so happy that her luck had finally changed and that she had finally found an actual job. Oh how little did she know...

It didn't take long for Nylea's mother to find out the true nature of her gently smiling new master, who was clearly interested in something other than the maids ability to clean... He abused his maids and made them bend to his will, as all of them were lowborn, poor girls he had picked from the streets so that none would even notice that they were missing. They had nowhere to go in search of shelter and thus they all submitted to their fate, including Nylea's mother.

Eventually what had happened to so many other maids before her now happened to her, and she became pregnant with her master's child. She had only one egg, and from that egg, a beautiful coatl girl with glass-like wings and glimmering jade belly was born. Her mother was so consumed on the hatred towards the child's father, though, that she couldn't love her own child, naming this beautiful little creature a cruel name, Odisse, which meant "hate" in her native tongue.

The children born in the mansion were kept behind locked doors so that those outside wouldn't know what was really happening inside the golden walls. After the hatchlings were old enough that they had learned to walk and speak, the master sold them into slavery. Although this was illegal within the city walls, if you knew the right dragon they would put you in touch with who you needed. The young slaves were taken outside the city to be sold elsewhere. Including Odisse once she was of age.

Unlike her mother, Odisse was fortunate enough to be bought as a servant in a much more appropriate family of wealthy dragons, who treated their servants with respect and kindness. They had a huge palace, with twenty members of the noble family living under the same roof. Some of the servants nursed the young hatchlings of the family while some acted as teachers, some as cooks and cleaners, and others were assigned for physical labor. Odisse acted as a handmaid for one of the young ladies of the family, following her around and keeping her company while doing all sorts of small tasks that were asked of her. Odisse was quiet and polite, however while serving she often felt a great sadness in her heart when she saw how much the young lady's parents loved her. The love that she had never gotten from her mother had left a dark hole in her heart, one that had only grown with her mothers despising stares and harsh, hateful words. Of her father, she knew nothing, as the only time she had asked of him her mother had slapped her so hard that Odisse never dared to ask of him again. Maybe that was for the best...

Few years passed quickly serving the noble family, and although she was just a mere servant, Odisse felt that she was happy serving her lady and her family. However, not every servant felt the same way... and one night, a great fire spread through the palace. So suddenly and quickly had it started that three of the family members were killed in their sleep. Many of the loyal servants died helping their lords and ladies outside, and the two youngest hatchlings of the family were burned alive in the embrace of their caretaker, desperately trying to guard them from the flames. Odisse hurried immediately to her lady, trying to help her out of the burning palace, but the ceiling collapsed and fell on Odisse, trapping her under the weight of the burning rafter. Her lady cried and screamed for help, unable to move the rafter herself, desperate to save the servant to whom she had grown so close. The lord of the palace heard his daughter's cries and came to rescue but even he couldn't move the rafter, and thus he had to make the decision to leave Odisse behind to save his daughter. The daughter cried and begged him to try again and not to leave Odisse behind, but Odisse smiled and nodded with tears in her eyes:
"Take her to safety, my lord."
As the cries disappeared into the distance, Odisse's vision started to blur from the heat and lack of oxygen, but just as she was about to pass out she saw five figures coming towards her before all went black.

The next time she woke up she found herself in the family's garden, where you could still see the palace burning. She was surrounded with five familiar faces, servants from the palace. One of the men crouched over her, orange eyes glittering the fire's glow, and said:
"See? They left you."
Odisse was still trying to grasp what had happened and why she was still alive when a thought hit her:
"Is the young lady alright? Is she safe?" she asked with great concern in her voice. The crouching dragon stood up and looked her with disappointed eyes.
"You're still concerned of them even though they left you to die? You're nothing put a slave for them! We just freed you! We freed all of us! You should thank us for that!"
Odisse stood up with anger burning in her eyes.
"You murdered innocent children! I don't need your bloodstained freedom, I was happy serving the young lady!" She hissed before running away, hoping to find the young lady and her father. Half the city had gathered to see what was happening even as the more adept Water dragons gathered to tame the magical flames with their own powers. The remains of the family and their servants had gathered in a small group, many of them laying on the ground injured. Odisse's eyes searched incessantly for the young lady, and when she finally found her on the ground, lying in front of her father, Odisse sprang to her crying. She kneeled beside the young lady who was unconscious. Though the young lady had some bruises and had clearly had a tough time getting out of the burning palace, Odisse was relieved that she was alive. The lord bend over with an apologizing look on his face.
"Odisse, I'm really sorry..."
Odisse shook her head.
"She is your daughter, I'm am your servant, family comes first."
As she said those words, a cold feeling struck her heart. The lord looked her in the eyes with a hint of sadness in his look and said:
"Our palace is in ruins... Our family torn from the sadness of those who aren't with us anymore... As we can't be sure who of you servants did light the fire... You know we cannot keep any of you servants anymore... Not even you."
Odisse gave one final look to the young lady she had once served. She gently wiped the tears from her cheeks, and smiled to the face that seemed to be so peacefully asleep. A final tear fell from Odisse's eyes as she turned back to her old lord.
"Keep her safe. Please."
The lord nodded. He took a small bag of coins from his pocket and gave it to Odisse.
"You know... My daughter always spoke well of you. She really liked and trusted you. But as things are now... It would be easier for her if you wouldn't meet her after this. Take this; it's not much but... My daughter would have wanted to give something to you before you left."
Odisse smiled politely and refused to take the coins.
"She needs them more than me. Farewell, my lord."
The lord bowed, and Odisse took her leave, never to be seen in the city again.

She wandered through the barren lands and scorching deserts of Dragonhome, learning to hunt and survive in the harsh environments. But even though she was brave, it didn't take many days for her to collapse due to starvation. Little did she know that luck was on her side this time, and a colorful caravan group found her, picking her up and mending the poor girl to health again. Odisse didn't speak of her past, nor did the members of the caravan group ask of it, and along with them she travelled all the way to the Eternal City, where the caravan stopped by regularly to entertain and trade.

Odisse thanked the caravan for their hospitality, and left them to search her place in this huge city of pyramids. She had never seen a city as big and magical as Eternal, which looked like a paradise to her eyes. There were lots and lots of different dragons, lush plants and vivid animal life even within the city walls. It looked like a city built on a huge oasis, and only the mere sight of it was enough to take Odisse's breath away.

Because the life of slavery and serving was all she had ever known, Odisse was clueless how to make decisions of her own, and in a way, she was even afraid to make them, as her tasks had always been appointed to her. She was clueless on the manners of searching for a job, and thus she ended up in the dark alleys, keeping a low profile so that she wouldn't get caught searching for food scraps, as she was afraid of getting kicked out from the city for doing so. In the dark of the night, she sometimes snuck to the river that flowed through the city, giving it's soil the fertility from which the exceptionally lush plantlife took root and flourished throughout the Eternal city. She learned fishing through trial and error, which helped her to survive on days when she couldn't find enough scraps to fill her belly.

Weeks passed, and living on the streets and fishing on the river bank had covered her beauty beneath dust and river muck. One fateful day, when Odisse was on her usual walk through the busy market street to find food scraps, she accidentally bumped in to a huge and wealthy looking male imperial who stopped before her. She felt a cold feeling in her stomach, as this was the first time she had gotten any attention while walking in the busy market, and she immediately feared on getting kicked out of the city for being a filthy beggar. Now even the lively stream of customers started to slow down and gave her shocked glares now that she had made this imperial to stop. Soon after realizing the situation, the first bypasser asked the imperial if the coatl was bothering him and should they call the guards to get rid of her. Now fear struck Odisse. Her heart was racing as she tried to make herself as small and inconspicuous as she possibly could in her situation. The imperial took notice of that, and took a few steps towards her, moving his huge wing to cover her from the striking stares of others.
"There's no need for that, she's with me."
The crowd was clearly just as amazed and puzzled as Odisse was when the imperial turned his gently smiling face to Odisse.
"Shall we go somewhere more quiet, my lady?"
Odisse didn't have the voice to answer. She just simply nodded and the two took their leave, the imperial still shielding her from the stares of others.

As they made their way through the busy streets of Eternal, Odisse still couldn't say a word, she just glanced the imperial now and then from the shadow of his glass-like wing. Her eyes were caught by the mesmerizing gold patterns that were painted on the imperials body that was covered in the finest of silks and garnments imaginable. She had taken notice that others in the market street had clearly known who this male was, which made Odisse wonder even more what her fate after bumping into such an important dragon might be.

They finally stopped before one of the hugest pyramids in the city. It was made of gold and obsidian like the other bigger pyramids, which had to mean only one thing: this dragon indeed played an important role in the city. The imperial added his hand to a golden panel next of what seemed to be a magically sealed entrance. Magical runes appeared on the panel and started shining under his hand, and the entrance opened. The imperial smiled towards Odisse.
"After you, my lady."
Odisse was a bit nervous, but she did as she was told and walked inside, the imperial following soon after. The inside of the pyramid felt even bigger than what it had felt on the outside.

To be continued...
