Orxata had never really belonged in the Shifting Expanse. Even as a hatchling, he'd thought of it as too glum and blah for him. The rigid work schedules chafed against his adventurousness; the drab dunes and lightning rods were uninspiring. For all of his childhood, he yearned for an excuse, a reason, to head out and face the world. His Search was the reprieve he'd been waiting for, and after just a bit too many times when he wandered off to look for his Charge, his clan simply released him from their care. Orxata was overjoyed, and he headed to the nearest port and took the first ship out of the harbor. It soon docked at Lanternlea Port, and the young Guardian spent some time wandering around, enjoying the sights and sounds of the new land. It didn't take long for the Search to reassert its pull, however. Whatever un-Lightning traits Orxata might have had, he had at least retained his Flight's propensity to analyze things, and he considered how to reconcile his drive to Search with his desire to experience the world at his own leisure. It seemed the best course of action would be to get a job that would enable him to travel—after all, he couldn't just live off the land forever. And it had to be a job that would allow him to visit many different lands and interact with many different beings, to maximize the chances of him finding his Charge.... He found sympathy among the dragons of the Exaudi. Its captain was herself another Guardian's Charge, and she had encountered another who was on a Search. She understood well the confusion such an important task can bring, and so she was inclined to hear Orxata out. The Exaudi was then in need of a permanent ship's cook, and the Captain and her crew found themselves more warmly disposed towards him when they tasted some dishes he prepared. The dreariness of his birth clan hadn't been able to strip all the creativity from him, and it looked as though (as he had known it would) it would take him beyond the horizons he'd dreamed of. Orxata was duly signed on as a ship's cook. Other crew members came and went, but he stayed on, soon rising to the position of Chief Cook. The Exaudi frequently plied the seas around Sornieth, and he had many opportunities to encounter new things and people. All the while, he continued Searching for his Charge. His time on the ship was a happy one. He took great pride in being able to whip up a variety of dishes, the better to stave off boredom during long ocean trips, and became even more creative in his recipes (though in some cases where he was excessively creative, some crew members preferred not to learn what was in their food). The crew occasionally ran into trouble on the high seas, and Orxata distinguished himself as a competent fighter—especially in defense of his beloved kitchen, which many joked was actually his Charge. Alas, it was not, and after many years of traveling with the Exaudi, Orxata reassessed how things were working out for him. Not too badly, as it turned out! Leave his stuffy old birth clan: check! See the world: check! Meet new people, experience new things: check and check... Still, none of them had been his Charge, and he'd seen enough maps to know that there was still much of Sornieth left to explore. Inland, for a start, where the Exaudi could not go. It took him some time to come to terms with it, but he soon determined that, once again, it was time for a change of scenery, and therefore a change of career. The Disillusionists, particularly the galleon crew, were sorry to see him go. He was always a cheerful dragon (barring those little times his kitchen was messed with, despite him specifically asking people not to do that), and definitely a lot sunnier than his prospective replacement. They would also miss his culinary creations, though perhaps not the ones with unidentifiable (though admittedly delicious) chunks of meat floating in them. Orxata was given a glowing reference by his employer; he clutched it close with pride. Perhaps someday he would return to the sea again...but for now, he had a Charge to find. And perhaps just as importantly, there were always, always new horizons to explore.
