Biography

SMILING SIGHTSEER
Hickory is a well-mannered boy with a penchant for traveling. He's a real outdoorsman, happiest when he's hiking through the wilderness. He takes up odd jobs and mercenary work to keep his pockets lined in the off chance he needs to buy an inn room or supplies. Thanks to his nomadic nature, he's well-versed in long hauls through the unforgiving wilderness, and he's excellent with a few different weapons, his favourite of which being a polearm.

Aside from traveling, he loves to forage, gather, and treasure hunt. Finding new trinkets and things to cook up is half the fun of the adventure, after all. Speaking of cooking up, this spiral is essentially a culinary genius (as long as you can stomach eating an exotic variety of foods). He can make a meal out of anything, and takes great joy in doing so.

Not satisfied with sticking around the lair all day, but still looking to have someplace to call home when the time comes, he's bought his way into Furvus territory by filling a position for the Second of the Prince's Crusades-- a long and difficult quest around Sornieth on the hunt for rare items and creatures. It's a win-win for him, really.

He's embarked on this quest in the company of two other individuals-- a brawler looking for glory, and the Prince's adopted son.

As the most well-versed in traveling and fighting, Hickory opts to take responsibility for marking down the result of the Crusade in his journal...
sUI7One.png

The crusade finally finished, Hickory and his companions now reside within Furvus territory. Although he still feels the urge to travel from time to time, he's much more content now spending time at home. He lives with Valenzuela and Cenn, and does most of the cooking for their household. Though he mostly maintains a a reasonable amount of humility, he's proud to hold a position in the Circle of the Elite.

August 11th, 2019

Today's the day we set out. I heard that the prince had already been talking about who he'd be sending off next, on account of the first group almost being done. They came back yesterday morning, and by nightfall I had already been given my offer. It wasn't a very hard decision, for me, at least. I don't know about the other two. Reckon that mirror didn't have too much of a choice, what with his father being the prince. The wildclaw is out here with us on some sort of disciplinary measure, I think, but I think he'll warm up after a little while. Only so long you can stay a stranger when you spend every day together.

Either way, I'm greatly looking forward to the trip.

I meant to write sooner, but we've been caught up in things. We spent a little bit getting accustomed to the routine, and now I think we've sunk right on into it, no problem. I understand that this is only our first destination, but if it stays this easy, it ain't gonna be any problem. We do most of our fighting in the nights and the early morning, and do our camping in the day. I don't mind much, since we keep cooler that way.

Now I don't mean to sound too ambitious, but I had some time to copy down the old log and have a look at it, and a big part of me is hoping we can do this faster than the first group. Says it took them fifteen days to head onto the next area, so I'm gunning for fourteen days or less. We'll see how that goes.

August 26th, 2019

586.png

Well, we didn't win out over the party before us, but we are right on track. So maybe we can get the second one a little faster... That being said, I'm excited to move on to the next area.

30290.png

Well, there we have it! And I believe that does put us ahead of schedule. This is a pretty valuable haul, too... I'm pretty excited about it. I think the Prince'll be right happy about it. We've been really holding our own in this place so far, so I'm excited to move on to a more challenging area.

We didn't even have time to set up camp before we found what we were looking for. And another one of these ancient genes, no less!! We're really on a roll, huh? Looking forward to the next challenge.

Admittedly, I think we're a little behind, now. The dunes are vast and winding, and it's hard not to get lost out in a place like this. That being said, we've finally made our way out. I carefully bundled up the egg and sent it back on its way, and I can only hope that it makes the journey safely. Our next destination is a nice change of pace from the unforgiving desert, and let me just say that I'm really looking forward to the change in scenery.

Five days isn't bad at all. Can't believed we nabbed one of those pohips, considering how big they are. Can't wait to send this back home, if I'm being honest. On to the next area, now... The morning is still very young.

30291.png

Well, I'll be darned. We're back to making really good time. And on top of that, we're bringing back another one of those rare ancient gene scrolls. I'm also starting to notice that we're getting along a little better. All of us sort of have lousy aim, but when we hit, we hit hard, and we've really started to rely on each other. Although I can tell I'm hardest the hitter of the group(and I'm only saying so because I know, not because I'm trying to brag), I feel confident knowing I've got those two to watch my back.

It's been a few months since we left home, and now we're so close to it again. It's dark out still, but if I look up, I can just barely make out the strung-together islands that make up home. Geographically speaking, it probably would have made more sense to start here, but on account of the resident wildlife being so formidable, I can see why we traveled farther to start off. I'm not complaining, of course, I love to travel, so I never mind the detour.

It's just funny to think that when we leave this place, it'll be months before we see home again.

November 27th, 2019

If someone told me I was going to die here, honestly, I'd believe them. In the meantime, I drew one of them foxes.

Figures as soon as I start to complain, we find something we're looking for, huh? Well, it's fine by me, anyway. Off to the savanna for us...

Okay, maybe I SHOULD complain more often. I don't even think we got ten battles in. Well... time to send this back to the prince. Sending eggs home... it always makes me wonder about who's gonna hatch out of them, what's gonna happen to them. Val was one of those eggs. It must be stressful, living around royalty your whole life and still being kinda disconnected from them. I don't wanna press him about it, though...

December 9th, 2019

Creaux flew out to meet us today. He seemd a little uneasy as he gave us the letter, and no kidding. Turns out another ancient breed just woke up, and now a bunch of the Flamecaller's first children are wandering around and causing trouble. Most of them are still hatchlings, though, and Her Majesty apparently insisted on hatching two. So now we've got two ancient dragons to look forward to when we get home...

On the bright side, unearthing the ancients meant also unearthing some of their gene scrolls, so there're a few more eligible items of interest on our list...

Nocturne spawning season is upon us again. The waterway is crawling with mimics, and I have no doubt that when we step outside, so will the rest of Sornieth. Although we only spent about two weeks down here, I'm pretty glad to be going back out into the sunlight again. Two weeks in a murky cave fighting off rats and slime and giant turtles feels like an eternity. In the meantime, now we've got another scroll to send home.

This is a good find. I know the prince really likes these ones. With how much he likes to see this pattern on other dragons, you'd think he'd have it on himself. Ah well, ain't my place to judge. Time to head out again.

--BOREAL WOOD--

XKIPRCC.png

January 9, 2020

The boys and I were out and about in the woods today when we heard the sound of wings from up above us. We got ready for a fight, but as it turned out, it was one of our own. A banescale- I didn't recognize him, what with us not being at home for the hatching. He wasn't very wordy- said his name was Byleth. Wanted to get in on the action. Something about him kinda unnerves me, maybe it's that empty kinda look he has. Either way, we took him with us and let him fight with us for a while. Gave Val a break, eleven knows he could use one.

I forget sometimes that he didn't really choose to be here, you know? I signed up, Cenn had the option and he chose this, and Val, well... he's just here on account of the Prince making him go. There's glory in it, sure, but it's gotta feel different when you're being made to. And he's young, too, a little younger than me. Honestly, I feel like he and Byleth might get along. They're both that quiet type.

On another note, gods can this banescale boy eat. I consider myself to be a pretty talented cook, but he must REALLY like my food, because he can't can't get enough of it. I've never seen someone eat so much at once. And then he's just raring to go fight again. I know he's still pretty young, but man, he never runs out of energy. Speaking of, I'm gonna get back to cooking.

January 18th, 2020

Seems like Byleth's had his fill of battle. Early this afternoon, he thanked us for our time and took off. He's definitely weird, but for a dragon just barely beyond hatchlinghood, he held his own pretty well. Val seems a little quieter than usual, but it also seems like a break did him well. I'm glad to have him with us again, not gonna lie.

February 2nd, 2020

30291.png

I don't have anything smart-alecky to say about this one. We've been out in this frozen [****]-hole for almost a month now, and I'm so, so glad to be heading out to somewhere warmer. I know the last group spent about a month in the Crystal Pool as well, so I'm hoping we have better luck than them.

--CRYSTAL POOLS--

26376.png

Well [****], we made pretty good time on this one!! I was pretty worried, what with the last group spending nearly a month here. Seems to me like we're making pretty good time, so on we go!!

--HARPY'S ROOST--

uk2sLdI.png

March 6th, 2020

32549.png

The Harpy's Roost is another of those treacherous place that's easy to get lost in. There's so much activity here, so many outposts that every move needs to be made carefully. Byleth flew in very recently, still as quiet as ever, but almost immediately after, we found what we were looking for. So... Maybe he's a good luck charm. Or something.

We're giving Cenn a break, now. The guy's really started to warm up to us, I think-- I think close company for this long has really done him some good. It's nice to think that when all of this is said and done, we'll be going home as friends.

32535.png

Maybe By IS a good luck charm. That was pretty fast. Kind of funny how he keeps finding bane scrolls, too. You've got a full set of genes already, buddy, you don't need anymore. For now, we'll send him back home with our newest prize in tow.

--THE MIRE--

March 17th, 2020

30290.png

We've been making really good time these past couple areas. Next up is... The Golem Workshop. I'm not gonna lie, I'm not looking forward to this overly much. I've heard stories about how treacherous this place is. Here goes nothing, right?

--GOLEM WORKSHOP--

ULI1gnV.png

March 17th, 2020, continued

This place ain't no joke. The monsters here hit harder than anything I've ever seen before. I consider myself to be a [****] good fighter, and these things truly scare me. We were doing sorta okay, taking time to heal eachother up and whatnot, and then we saw one of those Delvers. It hit me so hard that the next thing I knew my buddies had pulled me aside somewhere darker and safer to hide from the monsters while I came to.

I'm feeling a little better now, but [****] did that hurt. My body still aches from the swing, if we're being honest. In general, this place weirds me out. Walking around here makes me feel so small. Makes me wonder what could have possibly MADE a place like this. And... well, there are monsters here that Marcius never warned me about. Strange, hovering jellyfish made out of wires and filaments, long, wiry birds, strange little scuttling things that look maybe like scorpions. Now, Marcius is a construct too, far as I know. They know this sort of stuff. I would think that if they'd seen these things, they woulda said something. But they didn't, so these must be new, right?

It just makes me a little nervous to think that this big, sprawling workshop might still be in USE, you know?

May 31st, 2020

I never could have imagined how rough it was gonna be here. It makes me wonder if this whole thing was worth it. I think my bloodstream is about 90% healing potion. Some battles I drift in and out of consciousness, waking up when one of my allies pours some of that healing swill down my throat. I've done the same for my friends, too. When we manage to steal a few precious seconds in a brawl, it's never 'does anyone need a potion,' it's 'who's hurt the worst?'. This place is a nightmare, a neverending nightmare. I swear on my life that when we leave, I will never come back.

June 8th, 2020

7594.png

Val was out cold by the time Cenn and I managed to bring this thing down. And this time, just this time, we managed to take it out without completely destroying it. Just this time, we could bring it home. Three months... Three months of grueling fights and running and hiding and we are finally, finally out. I will say, the ordeals made us stronger. We had to reconsider our strategy. Swap a little speed to hit just a little bit harder. It paid off, and now we're out.

Just a few nights ago, Byleth came by with a letter. (Normally Creaux would deliver, but this is no place for a messenger. Byleth can hold his own if he gets stuck in a fight, so I imagine that's why they sent him instead.) Apparently something real strange is going on-- some big 'eldritch' portal opening up. The Prince says we're supposed to go check it out once we clear the Kelp Beds- says there's weird creatures coming out of it and they might have something good.

Honestly? After dealing with all this here, I'm feeling up to any task.

--KELP BEDS--

r6QE4rq.png

July 21st, 2020

7882.png

At night, the kelp here reflects silvery blue from the moonlight that filters in through the waves. It's kind of breath-taking, in an alien sort of way. Most dragons back home will never see anything like this... the Prince says the implements needed to make the magic that lets us breathe underwater are hard to come by, that they only get handed out for situations like this. We pull ourselves up onto the shore to sleep, empty the water out of our lungs and set up camp like normal. I'm almost sad to leave, knowing I'll probably never see this place again.

--FORBIDDEN PORTAL--

0kpJUTl.png

September 11th, 2020

This place... is bizarre. Some of the creatures here seem normal enough-- those fluffy llama looking fellas, for one. Some of them, though, I feel like I can't even wrap my head around them. Those pupowl things in particular, I feel like I don't know which end is which on 'em. One thing's for sure, though, these things hit hard. We're doing our best, that's all we can do.

October 19th, 2020

I don't know what happened. We were fighting a terror toad and it hit me all of a sudden with this big whirlwind or something. For a second I thought I blacked out- I still don't remember much- but I do remember suddenly whirling to the side and taking a ****ing swing at Val, and I saw him go down, and the toad got another shot at Cenn and then I swung at Cenn too, and he went down too, and I don't remember what even happened after that. One of them must have woken up and dragged us off before the **** thing ate us. I just can't stop thinking about it. How could I? How could I do something like that?

October 20th, 2020

498.png

That's it. There it is. We're done. We're free. We're out of here. I never thought I'd be so happy to be heading home. The boys and I are exhausted, loaded with new scars and stories. It's a long way home, but traveling will be a real nice change of pace from holding up here and fighting. I've got plenty to cook, and the broiler's always raring to go.

A part of me is worried that the boys and I might not be as close once we get home, once we're not traveling and relying on each other. But at the same time, I know that probably won't be the case- we've gotten real close. I think that honestly, we've become real good friends. I still feel ****in awful about what happened yesterday, and I can only hope that they forgive me... but I think it'll be a lot easier to make my case while I'm serving up dinner on the way home.

It did end up taking us a little longer than the last group-- but at the same time, the Portal hadn't been discovered, then. So, all in all, I think we probably did okay. I can't help but be a little bit disappointed, but what can you do? We still succeeded, and that's what matters.
