but i keep searching for the light

Hail, old friend; I knew you once, walked with you upon the ice, peered into the rifts and saw the starlight shining through. Where did you go at the end of the dark days, when the radiant king reached his throne? Alone you wandered on bruised feet, with clipped wings; no vow of knighthood good enough to spare you from your weeping. At the end of all things, my friend, I would have followed you - you, amazed, fierce, and proud - but with the chasms crumbling to either side, it is time to stand or time to fly.

I stand upon the bronze prow with my head to the sky

the stars flicker above but i don't trust them enough to fly

And he said, "let there be light", but the sky shattered in two. Blood drops dripped, red trenches carved in blue, cannonballs against glass and the earth screaming, gouging its heart out, every sullen body against its soul breaking, chasms cry and heaven lost, more more more.

And he looked down and told him, "Fly," but clipped wings and broken bones and falling, spiralling, sliced feathers and more blood, blood from sky and broken soul fills a river reeking death, broken broken broken.

Broken mind and broken soul and broken heart. Silk flutter weak breeze stars blinking, one two three then wink away laughing, dark night pours into day and cold. It's cold. Ice crack land frozen deserted alone. Alone. Help.

Heal, he said, heal your broken mind and broken soul and broken heart.

Come back.

But not while you fall.

No, never while you fall.

***

Taunt. Taunt. Voice laugh echo scream laugh taunt. Where. Where was it.

Hold your claws to head. Cry. Cry into dark, scream your lungs raw til coughing blood, more blood red joining the river you rest beside. But nobody came and nobody ever will come. Be alone.

Alone.

Slam your head against the dead earth and scream.

***

Recall every failure you've committed in your life.

Recall every mistake you wish you could erase.

Recall every person you hurt.

Recall everything you hate about yourself.

And scream some more.

***

And more.

***

But there's no one to hear you.

***

...

***

You have to hit rock bottom before you can crawl your way out.

***

In some flightless domain, the Skydancer stumbled across the land, blinded.

He tripped and collapsed.

***

He tried again.

***

Starend was his name. The last hope in the night sky.

He didn't know if he could hold that title anymore.

Darkness overshadowed his mind. He looked up to the stars above, the ones he received his namesake from. Once upon a time he would see the constellations and infinite life and the likehoods of the deities and all their power shining within the light. He would see hope and joy and everything this world was filled with, meant to be filled with. He just had to find it. He saw his life and what it could be.

Now he saw nothing but a few dead balls of gas.

***

A war was taking place in his head. The Tidelord is here. The Tidelord is gone. There was never a Tidelord. Tidelord is dead.

He's dead, along with all the other gods. He was alone.

The knight knew order no more. The world was falling apart, and he fell with it.

***

Once upon a time he would've prayed, but nevermore.

If the deities were real, why would they let him be in so much pain?

***

Wastelands turned into life.

Some life. Some animals, some plants. No more rocky, barren landscape. For now.

He talked to the birds, terribly missing the company of another soul. They didn't talk back.

***

On the twenty-seventh day, he met the ghost.

A plague bird screeched to welcome him to the graveyard. No gloomy mist hung over the deceased, nor was the air cold here in Sunbeam Ruins - but the place radiated a chill that was almost all to painful to bear.

The spectre itself was crouched atop an oversized tombstone, tail curled like a prowling cat. Wings hung limply down its sides, crudely cut claws clutching the weathered stone crawling with moss, one arm extended to make up for the tilt of the surface.

Starend, the blind seer he was, stumbled and ran headfirst into its line of sight. It visibly jumped, claws scrambling for a hold as little chips of stone pattered to the floor. It lowered its head, pink eyes narrowing.

"Bloody Hera." Tensing up, leaning forward, he tipped his neck and head down until he was almost level with the broken dragon below him, a quiet hiss rising in his throat.

The Skydancer lifted his head and stumbled. Something clenched in his throat when he saw the pattern of bones painted on its face, red banners waving amid tattered cobwebs - a herald to death. Fumbling with his own legs, he finally untangled himself and ran, some unseen terror driving him away.

The Pearlcatcher watched him ran, watched until he was out of sight. Then waited, and waited a little more. And finally lifted the head, after the Seer was long gone, and returned to his quiet sigil.
