Whenever someone tries to remind Grace that curiosity killed the cat, she is more than happy to remind them that satisfaction brought it back, and that she is far happier learning at her own pace than she would be holding herself back. Why wait, when she can start learning today?

Of course, that's why she has become a part of Clan Dark-Blood. Her insatiable curiosity lead her to follow her sister, Zora, into the night, and by the time she was discovered trailing along, it was too late to turn her away. More than that, Zora couldn't bear to send her sister back alone, nor to return to their clan. There was no choice but to allow Grace to accompany her onward, anxious as it made her for her baby sister to take such bold steps so young.

Grace made every moment of it count, though, collecting pretty plants along the way, asking questions about the wildlife they encountered, and most importantly, she charmed her way into Clan Dark-Blood with her enthusiasm for all things new. Nyx and Isis, the clan's weavers, took an immediate liking to the young Pearlcatcher, and within only a few days, they had grace in their cozy workshop, learning how to operate a small loom. She didn't seem to have the skill for it, but she had all the heart one needs to learn a new trade, and a willingness to chatter and gossip all day long. The two Nocturnes loved every minute of her enthusiastic company, and if she made only mediocre products, so be it. She wasn't formally an apprentice; she was just curious.

Nymphaea, too, found Grace to her liking. Taking her under her wing, she introduced Grace to the world of aquatic plants, her own personal specialty. Their time spent together is not as chatty as that spent with the weavers, but nonetheless, Nymphaea is perhaps more talkative than usual when guiding Grace through care instructions for a new plant, or teaching her how to best tend to those plants already blossoming in the halls of Clan Dark-Blood.

But there is still more to explore, and Grace has found some promising avenues behind Zora's back. Through Quirrel, she was introduced to the wonders of the Clan Dark-Blood library, a stunning cavern brimming with texts of all kinds. Any question she might have is bound to have an answer here, or at least the start of an answer, and by the warm, flickering lights sitting in the enchanted sconces along the wall, she often feels safe and protected. The library is a castle, and the knowledge within it an armor that Grace is gradually learning how to use.

There are matters, though, that everyone around her has cautioned her against exploring, which has only made her curiosity burn brighter. Even Quirrel, normally so quiet and unassuming, has warned her away from certain beings living within Clan Dark-Blood's winding caverns. Grimm was one such dragon, along with the beast that lives in the cold river below, and the monster that prowls the caverns, leaving only a sense of wrong wrong wrong in its horrible wake. They were framed as dangerous, far too dangerous for a dragon like Grace with little battle training, and to face them would be to face terrible harm.

And yet she visited each of them in turn.

The funny thing about curiosity is that it can go hand in hand with bravery, foolishness, and even luck. Grace had all of these things on her side when she sought out the forbidden personas of the cavern, and somehow, she has lived to tell the tale.

Grimm was the first one that she met, and the easiest to find. Flickering in and out among the flames, stopping him for a conversation involved only persistence and patience, waiting by the roaring fireside in the central cavern for him to step out of the smoke. He had little to say to Grace, but he spoke with great charisma, and as if she were an equal, rather than a child. Nothing he told her explained anything new, but the experience itself was what mattered.

After that, she visited the churning river, bringing with her an offering of fish and aquatic insects, taken from Nymphaea's gardens. Ikuturso surfaced then, accepting the gift gladly. She learned then that he is a hungry creature, and one of few words. He had little to say to her beyond offering his thanks, but he also made it clear she was welcome at the water's edge so long as she brought him a meal.

And then there was Anathema, the one known as only a monstrosity. Zora still has not stopped fretting over Grace for visiting such a terrible beast, has not stopped scolding her for her recklessness, and yet Grace is tempted to return. Anathema, so silent all the time, actually spoke to her. They had a conversation about stars and gods and the virtues of the night, and not a single drop of blood was shed.

If she cannot speak with Anathema again, Grace thinks curiosity really might kill her. But she must know more, because Anathema contains both the questions and answers of a lifetime.
