Biography
It happened for the first time during a trip to the trading post. Delfina was tagging along with another clan member to Baldwin's, strolling around the area, looking at rows of beakers and shelves of apparel, a Pearlcatcher's Pearl, Baldwin's Pearl, next to a strange, glowing plant. She poked at a mound of slime while listening, with half an ear, to the adults' conversation. Something about the weather. Boring. Suddenly she heard a shout, and turned towards the source of the noise, only to see the two dragons staring at her with a scared look in their eyes.
“What?” She’d asked. Neither answered. Baldwin’s eyes kept flickering between her face and something behind her left shoulder. She spinned around, fear coursing through her veins, sure there must have been some horrifying monster behind her. There was nothing. A half empty shelf, her wing. Her wing! It was nearly transparent. She could see shelves behind greenish blue skin, shelves that should have been hidden by her wing, and the red glow of a sizzling phosphorus pierced through her black feathers.
Her wing retained its opacity a few minutes later, and Delfina had sighed a sigh of relief, hoping it was a one-time thing, or maybe a hallucination. Or anything really, anything that meant it wouldn’t repeat itself. But it did. Again and again, each time worse than the other. The sixth time it happened, a few months after that first episode, she was barely more than a ghost, a sliver of black and blue and green that disappeared if you weren’t consciously looking at her. For seventeen hours she was like that and then, in a matter of seconds, was normal again.
Delfina didn’t know what would happen if she disappeared entirely. Would she merely be invisible to all, even herself, or would... Something else happen? One thing she did know, was that she never, ever wanted to discover the answer to that question.
And so she set out to find a cure.
