He'd left home as an adolescent, after his father drove him away. He was too soft, too sentimental, and while his mother treasured and nurtured her sensitive son, his father couldn't have been more unhappy with him. He stole away in the dark of night, his heart breaking about leaving his mother behind, but not being able to endure his horrible father any longer.

It felt good to be free of the judgement and disdain, and while he missed his mother immensely, he blossomed and thrived on the beauty of the world around him.

The only time he even considered returning home was several years later, when word reached him that his mother had fallen ill. He knew he had to be by her side, regardless of his father's opinion of him. He returned to his birth clan to find that her time was indeed limited.

As she breathed her last breaths with her son by her side, his heart broke and a small fire ignited within his soul. He intention was to leave, without encountering any of the rest of their clan. They were no longer his people, nor was he theirs.

An ill-fated comment by his father, regarding the weakness of emotion, caused him to halt his steps and turn back, facing him with more boldness than he had ever felt before. A hiss escaped his lips as he defended the name of his mother, and the fire within him exploded in a rage that streaked forth from his claws in a stark crack of lightning. In a split second it was over, but the force had left the ground around his feet and the surrounding trees scorched and blackened.

No one moved. Dragons of the clan stood still, shocked, and wary of his next move. His father lay knocked to the ground, moving slowly as he tried to process what had happened. He sat up and stared as his son, mouth agape. A large, scorched wound marked the side of his face, though the rest of the bystanders remained untouched. It was an ugly reminder of his attitude and behaviour that he would bear the rest of his life.

The wildclaw held his gaze and he walked towards him, glimpsing fear in his father's eyes for the first time. He burned his gaze into him, through him, until he reached him, then simply stepped over him, no longer afraid of him. He walked back into the hut where his mother lay, kissed her forehead and held her face for a moment, repeating his final goodbyes. He then turned and left the village, walking past his father again without so much as a glance, never looking back.

He walked for some time before finally taking to the skies and flying through the night, fighting the grief that now tore through his heart. It was only when the first light of dawn peaked over the horizon that he came to rest, landing on the edge of a forest, overlooking a valley. Tears escaped his eyes as he mourned his sweet mother, a flower among thorns that should have been given a better life. She may have raised a soft son, but he was stronger than anyone knew, and he carried the same genuine and caring heart of his mother. Her legacy would live on, and he would defend her name until his own dying breath.
