Biography
Proud part of the Phthalo Army
By Zikitty
Swell had left his homelands long ago. Though he was darkly coloured, he just didn't quite fit in. Flying through the air, he was much more unstable than the others, and that was really saying something for a spiral.
He also struggled to hunt. Between his lack of coordination and poor eyesight, he couldn't even get a mouse. Insects were a little easier, and plants were alright as long as he didn't get sent anywhere with toxic ones he could pick accidentally. His birthclan thought he was daft and weak. So, they sent him away. It was harsh, but he was seen as a danger to the clan. They left him with only his name, Swell, for all the bumps and bruises he gained from his haphazard actions.
Swell now found himself on a beach. The roaring expanse of the ocean seemed to beckon to him with each wave. He felt drawn in. He stepped forward carefully, determined to make an accident free path. An outside onlooker would have seen him wobble to and fro, but in his mind he did fine. Relief flooded through him as the surf met his claws.
He waded in up to his belly, looking out over the sea. It stretched as far as he could see, undulating beneath the clouded sky. He closed his eyes instinctively and dove in with a powerful kick from his hind legs.
He clawed his way along the bottom, eyes screwed shut. Something tugged at his secondary wings. He flinched away blindly, but his tail reflexively moved towards the pull to counter balance. Whatever it was got hold of his tail and dragged it along, spinning him around. The rest of his body followed, a pull all around him.
The current dragged him off with a power he did not expect. It tumbled him along the sea floor, bouncing him off rocks and dragging him to some unknown destination. All he could do was hold his breath and let his body go slack, a nearly impossible thing for a spiral.
At last he came to a stop. He has run up against something that held him there against the current. Jaws grabbed his neck, just below his head, and pulled him from the current. At this point he was resigned to his fate.
It came as a complete shock when he was dragged up onto a rocky ledge. It scraped his hide painfully and the jaws dropped him. "Open your eyes," a deep voice said, echoing faint.
Very slowly Swell complied. He was somewhere dark, and a figure stood over him. Another dragon?
It nudged something forward, "Eat this."
Swell was too nervous to question so he took a couple bites. It was horribly bitter, but he swallowed it anyway.
"Follow me," the strange dragon said before plunging into the water at the edge of the ledge.
Swell hesitated then screwed his eyes shut and followed.
He bumped into what he assumed was the other dragon. It grunted, "You can open your eyes you know, it doesn't hurt, though it's a little hard to see. The food I gave you will allow you to breathe and talk down here for a while as well."
Swell took a breath in, shocked at how easy it was. Then he opened his eyes. Before him swept a wide open plain of water and sand, the distance growing hazy. The dragon beside him was a bogsneak, but the most shocking thing about him was just how clearly defined his details were.
Swell had never before seen so clearly.
