A former alchemist, it was Macaalu who was bled for Maalgwyb's creation. He was found on the brink of death by Catharsis, whom was horrified.

After he was nursed back to health, Macaalu stalks the crypts with new purpose: to ensure no one is ever hurt like he was.

 Macaalu originally followed his sister Maluras to the Cathedral, but once he arrived, couldn't find her. He continued to look for her until she revealed herself to be dwelling in the depths of the crypts, where he chose to reside as well. Due to the proximity of the alchemical work taking place, he chose to study it alongside several others.

Unfortunately, he didn't grasp it as well as the others, and it for this reason his blood was drawn from one particularly cruel alchemist for an experiment, and left to die afterward. He was found by Catharsis, another alchemist, who dedicated herself to nursing him back to health; once he was stable, it was plain his scars would never fully heal, and he found new purpose: hunting those whom would use others to reach their goals.
