A Tale of Life Lost

I frown at the young one before me, tilting my head. I do not understand what he is asking of me. Not really. I know he’s supposed to be here, with me. With many others, in fact. And yet, life wreaths around him, coursing through his veins. He is not like us.

I see stars flit by me as others pass by. Some skim icy waters with chirps of joy. Others soar far above, eyes alight as stars dance in their eyes, swirling around their claws and knocked away with a single flap of their wings. They are our life. They are what give us strength here, letting us soar into the heavens, swim the vast seas of the night, and leap from peak to soaring peak. These grounds are ours, and ours alone. This is the land of those long gone, who have earned their peace.

So why is this little one here, and why does he feel the need to speak to me, of all those past? I can see wisdom beyond his years in his eyes, but that doesn’t matter here. I’ve seen hatchlings here just like him, gone before their time, but they belong here, like me. So why is he here, disturbing my rest? I feel my tail flick over my claws in irritation as he sits there, looking up at me. Has he never seen a spirit before? Why couldn’t he go play with the other hatchlings, or mess with some other poor drake? I’m ready to snap at him for waking me up when he finally speaks, but it isn’t what I expect to hear.

“You need to come home.”

What? But I am home! This land is my home now! These shores have been my resting place for millenia, and I like it here! What is this bundle of fur talking about? I prepare to ask, only for him to sigh.

“Not here. You need to return to us. To her.”

Her. I remember her. That little Fae, with ruby eyes and a body of metal, worrying about every little detail of her life. No, of the lives of her clan. These Wanderers mean a lot to her. If I weren’t dead, I’d care more. She is one of my descendants after all. But I like it here. There’s no need for me to go back. The hatchling shakes his head. He seems to know what I’m thinking, much like I did when I was alive. I tell him I won’t come back. That I refuse. He turns away from me, almost bowling me over with his tail.

“You will come back, Aria. If not now, then later.” He pauses, looking back at me. “By then, you might be too late.”

I let him walk off, then scoff and return to my nap. Surely this little nuisance doesn’t mean that. I’ll always be here, with my family, my friends. I’ve earned my peace. All of us have. There’s no need to be disturbed like this.

Why would I have to go back?

When I open my eyes, I’m not on the shore I know. I stretch, looking around. I’m alone, and shrouded in darkness. I can’t help but jump at the sounds around me. This doesn’t sound like my home! The movement around me, the growls, the clicks and rumbles, none of this is like that starry shore. This is different.

I’m different. I feel heavier. I look down, only to see my usually insubstantial form is definitely more solid than it should be. I realize then that I can sense the emotions around me. Just like in life.

No. I cannot be alive again. That’s impossible, isn’t it? I recall the hatchling’s words to me, clear as day. No, I refuse. I won’t give up that starry shore I called home!

When the light fades, I feel a sense of hopelessness. I cannot return. Not while I’m here. I feel my head droop, only to freeze.

The stars! They’ve returned to me! They glimmer on my chest, like a protective shell, and I see them dance on my wings. If I cannot return home, I’ll take a piece of it with me.

I may not like the fact that I’m back, but I cannot change that. I’m back, and I must be back for a reason.

That’s right. Her. I’m back for that little Fae. Why does she need me? Has something happened to my little Clockwork? To her Wanderers?

I look about, finding the northern star in the sky, and I know where to go. I’m back, and I can only guess as to why, but I won’t fail. I had earned my rest before, and I’ll earn it again.
