| Untotooku wasn't sure what drew them towards him. The little orange insects than constantly rested on him, clouding the air around him with the hazy smoke that only he seemed to notice. It left him in a perpetually exhausted state, and some of the creatures he passed seemed to fall straight asleep. (It had lead to him avoiding others, or others avoiding him.) He never seemed to be able to get any sleep, so he decided to get of what seemed to be the cause of his problems. First he tried picking them off, but they would just come back or more would appear. He rolled around in the dirt, scraped against a tree or two, dived so the air would blow them off, but none of it worked. He always seemed to have missed one, and then more would come, and he was close to giving up. After trying a few more methods, he only had one left. The water. Untotooku hated the water. When he was just a hatchling, his parents had been flying, him on his father's back, to young to fly, when they started to plummet. Untotooku was thrown from his parents, plunging into an icy lake beneath. He had heard muffled thumps, saw dark shapes on the ice as his parents crashed, several feet from the hole had slipped through. He remembered struggling, trying to move his sluggish limbs and wings, thrashing his tail as the cold set in. Why weren't his parents pulling him out? Which way was up? Someway, though Untotooku managed to splash a wing out, then a claw, then his tail, until he pulled himself out. He dragged himself to his parents unmoving forms, nudging them with his snout, poking them with his tail. They didn't get up. Then, he knew. They were dead. They had to be. And he had no idea why. He just knew he should get away, so whatever brought his parents down from the sky wouldn't get him too. 5 days later, on the edge of a great plateau, he noticed the first little orange insect settled in his shoulder. And two parents morned the son they had lost, evidence of his drowning a short distance from where they woke up. |
