The Storm Chaser

______ A storm chaser. That's what I was. I lived for the thrill of the whipping rain, howling winds, and thunderous flashes that cascaded from the sky around me. The lighting clan was always shrouded in thunderstorms, beautiful and tame, enough to lull me to sleep in times of uncertainty, but out here above the ocean's torrents, it was untamed. Only the bravest among my kin could traverse these wild storms safely. Myself and my friend, Blackice, a potion brewer, were just such dragons. We rode the ever changing winds together, dodging electricity by only a fraction of a second. But there was one storm that changed my life, where I wasn't quite careful enough, and I paid dearly for it. During a rare and devastating storm Blackice and myself took to the air. We could see the sea enraged, swirling, rising, and devouring all in it's path, it was perfect. For a few hours things went smoothly and we enjoyed ourselves. But with a flash of lighting that all changed. A searing heat erupted throughout my body starting around my spine, and I fell. With heavy eyes I watched as my friend fell above me trying to right himself, had we been struck? The pain seared and my eyes glued shut, and the next thing I knew, the waves swallowed me. I couldn't move, no matter how hard I tried something felt as though it was blocking my ability, maybe the lighting strike damaged my nerves. Water filled my lungs as darkness wrapped around me and consciousness began to wane. I settled deep in the silt, just as my vision cut off, a small glowing fish swam around me like it itself was made of the water around it. It glowed brightly like a gleaming star, it was beautiful.

______ When I awoke all I saw was the glowing fish illuminating the darkness, it swam energetically around me before retreating into a small ceramic pot next to me. Grabbing it made me feel warm and full of life, I called for the fish to come out, that I would not hurt it. When it didn't emerge I decided to move on, to find answers, as to why I could breath in the depths of the sea, how I was alive, what had happened, and if Blackice was okay. As the distance from the pot grew so too did my fatigue and breathing became harder as if my lungs were slowly filling with water. I stopped when it became too much and made my way back to the fish, now watching me from above its pot. Was this the reason I could breath, why I was still alive? I decided to take the pot for good measure and the pain or trouble breathing never returned. So that answered that. But what about Blackice, well, that question lasted many years, many, long dark years as I searched the ocean for him. Never once had the lighting clan come to find me, I grew to hate them as time marched on, from my point of view, they abandoned me. My mind wandered to my mate, was she still alive, did she wait for me, or, did she abandon me as well? With time my hatred grew, my loneliness mounted, and my will broke. Why must I suffer this dark abyss with no one but a glowing fish that I apparently owe my life to? To find, my friend, to know his fate with my own eyes, that's right.

______
A cry called from the top of the ocean, it was the first voice i'd heard in years, and it was a cry of panic. Something in me pushed me forward, pushed me up, and I soared through the water like the skies I once called home. For the first time in forever, I breached the surface. Before me a beautiful coatl struggled against a raging storm, she stared in fear at my arrival with glowing eyes like that of the purest yellow lighting. A light clan dragon. Above her trying to help, another coatl, a small female, much too young to be of any help. The young dragon's eyes were the color of the wind, and filled with fear. I dove down under the drowning coatl to use my body as a platform for her to rest on, as I lifted myself out of the water. She became unconscious shortly after I took to the air and she was breathing heavily, but luckily she was alive. I took her and the adolescent dragon to an island nearby and waited for her to wake. The young wind dragon explained that she was showing her new friend Urora, to her new home in the wind clans territory with her sister when the storm hit. She said her older sister was struck by lighting and Urora tried to save her and that's why she was in the water. I asked why Urora was heading to the wind clan but she wouldn't tell me why a light dragon abandoned her clan. I spent the time staring at her unconscious form as the young dragon played around with the glowing fish nearby... she really was beautiful. Her body glistened like stars in the night sky itself and and I couldnt help but be mesmerized. Urora huh, what a beautiful name. A few hours later she awoke and thanked me for my rescue, even her voice was like silk. She asked why I was so far from my clan and I told her my story. With a saddened look she smiled and offered to help take me to the wind clans territory to see if I could join them with her, that maybe they could help me find my friend. I stared at the ocean in thought, it had been years of loneliness and worry, maybe, it was time to leave, maybe she was right about the wind clan being able to help. I turned to her, and agreed.

______
Not once in my wildest dreams did I ever expect this to happen. I was to be presented to the clans leader and there speaking to the leader. Was Blackice.
