History: It is said that a guardian's charge is their destiny- the reason for their birth. But for a long time, Quicksnap felt like this was just a fairy tale. Just old traditions that the guardian families passed on from one generation to the next. And who could blame him- when in his adolesence all of his siblings felt that insatiable itch, the wanderlust deeply ingrained in a guardian's instincts to go on the Search for their charge, Quicksnap felt... nothing. Only confusion at the urgency that seemed to have possessed his brothers and sisters.

Others around him wondered if there was something wrong with him- some defect, maybe, that kept him from being able to sense the call of his charge. Quicksnap himself mostly found this annoying; he didn't feel like he was missing out on anything, so what was the problem? And so it was for nearly fifty years- Quicksnap lived a long, fairly contented life as a loner, away from the judgement of other guardians and the pressure of their expectations. He'd thoroughly convinced himself that the Search was nothing but a tradition, and an entirely optional one at that, something he was frankly better off without.

Until one crisp autumn morning he jolted out of a sound sleep, seized by a sensation in his soul that was equal parts an urgent tugging and an ache of desperate longing. To his own astonishment and trepidation, Quicksnap realized that his Search was upon him, at long last. In spite of his previous derision, he found that he could not ignore the call now that it was upon him; it possessed him, consuming his attention so that he could scarcely focus on anything else. Was this how his siblings had felt?

It took some doing- a few years of a hunt- but finally he found his charge; a young pearlcatcher named Beech. And she was very young, scarcely old enough to leave her parents' territory. If she was his charge, no wonder he hadn't felt it until so late- he couldn't Search for a dragon who wasn't even born yet. Beech was a little taken aback by Quicksnap at first, but she bounced back quickly, excited as ever she was to make a new friend. To Quicksnap's relief protecting her wouldn't involve trying to ingratiate himself into her clan, as she too was a rover, and it wasn't long before the two of them were best friends and travel buddies.

At last Quicksnap really understood what the other guardians had been talking about, that sense of purpose his life had been missing until now. He knew that come what may, he would defend Beech with his life.

Then, they accidentally wandered into the territory of the blood cult, Clan Haemo. Quicksnap didn't recognize the magic that the skydancer who challenged them for trespassing was using, but he knew enough to realize that it was unnatural, and there was no telling what it could do. He fought like a demon to protect his friend, and his courage and ferocity impressed the skydancer. Before he could fathom what was going on, Quicksnap found the empty skin of a giant white toridae thrown over his head... found his body twisting and mutating... Found a voice whispering words that sent his mind tumbling into darkness...

Such loyalty. Such strength. But ought it not be given to a better cause? Sleep now, my son. Sleep, and awaken your true self.

When the skydancer Conri directed Quicksnap to attack Beech, however, he badly miscalculated. Unable to disobey, the thralled guardian attacked Beech, wounding her so badly that she would lose a leg. But this act, to maim his Charge, shattered something in Quicksnap that not even Conri's magic could hold together. Though Quicksnap obeys his dark master when given direct order, he is unstable and half-mad with guilt and grief at all other times. The Clan Haemo healer, Tethras, gave Quicksnap the pearl they managed to steal from Beech during the fight, and he curls, slumped around it, protecting the pearl with all the ferocity a mother dragon would use to protect her egg. Even the blood cult, for all their lack of morality, can't help but admit that the sight of this guardian, eyes glazed with Conri's magic and forepaws wrapped protectively around a lost pearl, is a bit tragic...

Personality: Quicksnap used to be a fairly laid back, easygoing kind of dragon. An older guardian who'd lived a long time and kicked plenty of butt in that time, he wasn't afraid of much and met most threats with a snarky joke.

Nowadays, there isn't much left of his old self. He spends his time either coiled around Beech's pearl, nuzzling it and crooning to it, or snarling with incoherent, mindless aggression at anyone who draws too close.
