A Tale of Time Wasted

I clutch my pearl to my chest, my eyes glinting in the moonlight. The moon is full tonight, and I cannot help but pull myself further into the shadows. I don’t want my wings to give me away. Am I doing something wrong? Perhaps, in the eyes of some, I am. Not to me, though. Oh no, not me. I have different plans.

I stop peering through the hole in the roof of the tunnel, quirking my head to the side as I hear footsteps coming my way. I wait, and I see a small Skydancer walk into the moonlight. Her deep blue eyes glint as she peers around, her wings fluffing out a bit as she does so. She’s obviously not comfortable here. She isn’t the one I’m waiting for, however.

The Fae that follows her is the one I’m looking for. Her body has a metallic glint to it, flashing gold in the light of the moon as her ruby eyes flicker up to the roof, or really the thin crack in it. She practically sidesteps the gravel that falls as she looks, not letting a single speck catch in her metallic limbs. She’s clutching her Sandglass with one set of talons, her crest falling back in a sort of weary apprehension. She turns to the Skydancer.

“Are you absolutely sure the Wanderers went to the Wyrmwound?” Even with her monotone voice, the voice every Fae bears, I can tell she’s asking a question. The Skydancer quickly nods, confirming what I already know. “And you’re certain they’re all there?” Another nod answers her, and I hold back a chuckle. How surprised will she be when she discovers two entire factions of her Wanderers left the Wyrmwound, headed off to find their missing Fae?

The Skydancer, after gazing at the stars above a moment longer, turns down another tunnel and calls for the Fae to follow her. The Fae pauses, frowning once more at the moon above. Is that concern in her eyes? Certainly not! She knows how to read the stars and the great moon above. And yet, as she leaves the small split in the roof, I can hardly hold back my cackle of glee.

With a wave of my tail, the moon shifts above me, turning from a full orb to the thinnest sliver of a crescent. Each and every star shifts, changing and swirling. I watch as my illusion fades, and I finally let my laughter burst forth as I look down the tunnel the Fae and her guide ran down.

The laughter finally subsides, and I look back up at the moon. I should have enough time to enjoy it’s glow. I let my wings sparkle in the darkness, and I peer at the silver claw of a moon through a skeletal mask. Golden swirls finally lower as I sigh, a large smile lighting my face.

The Fae should be back in about an hour with her guide, ready to check the stars once more to test their course. I’m thoroughly enjoying the show, in all honesty, and a part of me wonders what would happen if I fabricated a monstrous creature with my illusions of light, turning them around in their circuit.

After all, a little chaos never hurt anyone.
