⌊ Nathraichean ⌉ The Wayfarer From Afar

An alien being shrouded in soft cloth and an otherworldly mask, they wander the world in search of the lost one- their sibling, their friend, their destined leader. But they arrived too late- or perhaps too early, they cannot be sure- and so they linger in the hopes that they will find some sign of them, be it in the trees or in the earth or- dare they imagine?- in the people that call this world home.

You meet the stranger in the market one day. It’s busy, as it always is, and the plaza hums with the presence of hundreds shifting and cajoling, their voices ringing in melody.

The sun is warm, the wind is fair, and the city is alive.

It’s then that you find them. They stand among the crowds, and yet their place is a pocket of silence. Bodies flow around them, giving them the space others can only long for. It seems a wonder that you missed them until now for they are taller than the crowds. More concerning, however, are the details you begin to note, the limbs too long to be natural, the neck that bends at an unnatural angle to meet the eyes of those passing by. Though not unlike yourself in basic principle, there are too many aspects of their person that seem off, from their sweeping mane of hair to the clasp of their hands, the way the mask sits too tightly upon their face.

The longer you look, the more you see. The mask does not expose the being’s eyes. It does not allow for breathing. Can you even recognize the material? The same can be said for their robes. What is it? Silk? Cotton? It shines one moment and seems plain the next. Are their fingers oddly folded? Do they contain an extra joint?

Are you seeing things, or are the flowers at the stall nearby bending toward them? Did the guard’s faithful hound- known for her fierceness and loyalty- just leave his side to nuzzle at the stranger’s knees?

The odd one pats the dog gently. It pauses to admire the flowers. Then it turns its gaze to meet your own.

There is quiet. It is not unlike taking the first breath after a near drowning. It is like stepping into the light after being trapped in the dark.

Then it breaks.

Once again you are alone in the crowd, and the stranger is gone.
