Waves crashed on the rocky shore, sending fine sprays of mist upon the ground. A slight breeze carried the sea spray far over the shore and into the grass at the rock’s edge.
An imperial, ocean-colored scales glistening with water droplets, padded out onto the shore. She looked around once and made a beeline for a large boulder near the water’s edge. Sitting on the boulder, the dragon opened her mouth and began to sing.
Her voice was soft and sweet, yet still carried far over the waves. She had come out to this beach to take a slight break from the rest of her clan. Her best friend, Midas, had practically begged her to get away for a bit, and reluctantly she had agreed.
It was nice out here, she had to admit. Quiet, no one around for miles.
Unbeknownst to her, she had an audience.
A dark shape glided through the water. Mottled scales blended in with the dappled sunlight, making it near impossible wo tell where the light ended and the shape began.
The shape slid ever closer to the imperial on the shore. Melody sang on, oblivious, as the shape began to rise out of the water.
It was another imperial, dark blue scales glimmering in the sun. He walked over to where she was sitting and stopped a few feet in front of her.
Melody stopped singing and opened her eyes, startled, when a shadow fell in front of her. She looked up to see another imperial standing there.
The first thing that struck her about him was his eyes. They were dark, completely devoid of light.
They were beautiful.
The other dragon didn’t say a word, just stared down at her with those mysterious eyes. Melody cleared her throat.
“Um, hello,” she said. The imperial remained silent.
“It’s a nice day out,” Melody continued, somewhat anxious. Why wouldn’t this dragon talk?
She moved over on the boulder. “Would you like to sit down?”
The imperial shook his head and finally opened his mouth.
“Continue.”
His voice was deep and melodious and sent shivers through Melody’s spine. She tilted her head.
“I’m sorry?”
“Continue singing.” The imperial didn’t say anything else, just gazed down at her.
“You… you like my singing?”
The imperial nodded. Melody smiled.
“Well then, of course I will! Here, let’s see…”
She began to sing a soft melody about a fae fisherdragon who had fallen in love with a water spiral. It was a sweet tune, and while it started out somewhat sad – the spiral couldn’t breathe above the water – it ended happy.
It was one of her favorites.

Melody sang until sunset. Every time she stopped, the other would prompt her to sing another song. She didn’t mind; if anything, she was happy to have such a captive audience who seemed to love her singing so much.
Finally, though, it was time for her to leave.
“I’m sorry,” she said as her last song trailed off. “It’s getting late; I must head back to my clan. The hatchlings need me. Aeries has no parents, you see, and I must take care of her.”
The imperial tilted his head. Melody smiled up at him.
“It was very nice meeting you, err… I’m sorry, I’m afraid I didn’t catch your name.”
The imperial dipped his head. “Aiolos.”
Melody smiled. “Nice to meet you, Aiolos. I’m Melody.
“And I’m sorry,” she continued. “But I must leave now. Goodbye.”
She turned around and began to walk back the way she had come. She hadn’t gotten very far before footsteps sounded behind her.
Melody glanced over her shoulder to see Aiolos following her. She stopped and blinked in confusion.
“I’m sorry, did you want something?”
The imperial once more didn’t say anything, merely stared at her. The two stood in silence for a few minutes before a thought came to her.
“Oh! Did you want to see my clan?”
A tiny nod. Melody smiled warmly.
“Alright then,” she said. “It’s this way, come on.”
She turned back around and headed for her clan, glad to hear the sound of footsteps start up once more.

Midas looked up as Melody walked into the clan’s lair, but his greeting died when he saw Aiolos behind her. Melody smiled at him.
“Midas, this is Aiolos,” she said. “He heard me singing and wanted to see the clan.” She turned to Aiolos, who had remained silent. “Aiolos, this is my best friend Midas. He’s a joker, but he has a kind heart.”
Aiolos dipped his head in greeting. Midas gave a somewhat uneasy smile.
“Hello,” he said. “Welcome to our clan.” He turned back to Melody. “Aeries has been asking for you,” he said, sounding slightly more comfortable now. “She had another nightmare.”
Melody’s face scrunched up in sympathy. “Poor thing,” she murmured. “She turned to Aiolos. “Would you like to come see the hatchlings?”
Aiolos nodded.
Melody led him toward the nesting grounds, which were currently occupied by a pair sitting on their nest. The dragons looked up curiously at the newcomer but didn’t comment on his appearance, merely nodded to him and Melody.
“Melody!” came a voice. A little ridgeback came bounding up to her, grinning from ear to ear. “You’re back!”
“I am,” Melody confirmed. “And I’ve brought a friend. Aeries, this is my new friend, Aiolos.”
Aeries stared up, wide-eyed, at the new imperial, who gazed down at her. Melody wasn’t sure, but his gaze seemed… softer, somehow. Less imposing. It made his eyes look even more striking.
“Are you going to join the clan?” the little dragon whispered. Melody looked to Aiolos, curious. Was he really going to join them?
Aiolos tilted his head for a moment, before he gave a tiny smile.
“I am.”
