Somewhere off to her left, a golden, serpentine form crouched among the bamboo stalks. He crept ever closer and, as soon as he was close enough, began belting out something entirely different. “Midas!” Melody huffed, halting her song. “You know you’re tone-deaf.” “Aw, c’mon, Mel,” Midas laughed. “Don’t you know loud music is my forte?” “I know, I know,” Melody replied with a chuckle. She shook her head.“Why don’t you go tell puns to someone else? I’m kinda busy here.” “Because! You know that’ll only get me in treble,” Midas retorted, faking a pout. “Most folks prefer something a little more so-fish-ticated.” “Fish has nothing to do with this conversation,” Melody snickered, resting her head in her claws to hide her grin. “Sure it does,” Midas insisted. “I came here to tell you the baby Ridgies need feeding.” “Oh, the newborns,” Melody sighed, shaking her head. She started walking back to the clan lair. “I almost forgot about them.” “Aw, you didn’t forget,” Midas replied, following close behind. He smiled softly. “Everybody needs a break.” They walked in silence for a while. “Y’know, sometimes I think you work yourself too hard,” Midas commented. “What makes you say that?” Melody asked, turning her head slightly. She certainly thought she worked just enough. Maybe she did spend a little too much time with the hatchlings, but she always tried to take some time for herself. “Well, I mean, you spend just about every waking moment with the hatchlings,” Midas pointed out with a shrug. “I know you love ‘em and all, but...” he trailed off. “Hey, I appreciate the concern, Midas,” Melody replied, stopping just outside the lair entrance. “Those kids need me though, especially the ones who lost their parents. You’ve heard them crying in the night, haven’t you?” Midas turned his gaze to the ground. “Yeah,” he answered, toying with some grass at his feet. “Then I hear you singing them back to sleep.” He looked back up and met Melody’s eyes. “You don’t get a lot of sleep, do you?” “Those children need me, Midas,” Melody stated firmly, turning to enter the lair. “As much as I might want to, I can’t just stand around and sing all the time.” As he watched his best friend disappear inside, Midas sighed. Melody thought she heard him mumble something but couldn’t make it out. She shook her head and dismissed the notion. There were Ridgeback younglings that needed her attention.
